Charles Deering Estate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Charles Deering Estate consists of a three floor wooden house and a three floor stone mansion on a 440 acres (1.8 km²) property in Palmetto Bay, Florida in the United States. It was the home of Charles Deering, brother of millionaire industrialist James Deering. Charles used the property regularly between 1916 and 1927. The property was ravaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, but has been restored and reopened to the public in the year 2000. The grounds have what is thought to be the largest virgin coastal tropical hardwood hammock in the contiguous U.S. The estate, located at 16701 S. W. 72nd Avenue on Biscayne Bay, was acquired by the state of Florida in 1985. It was also the starting line for the Amazing Race All-Stars in 2007.
