Charles Dausabea is a Member of the National Parliament in the Solomon Islands. In May 2006 he was arrested on charges of rioting in the April 2006 Honiara riots. Since the appointment of Manasseh Sogavare as Prime Minister, Dausabea was appointed Police Minister while still in jail. The appointment was very controversial and was severely criticized by Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer.
Mr Dausabea stood trial in 2007 before the Solomon Islands High Court. Mr Dausabea and his co-accused were acquitted of all charges in relation to the Honiara riots.
In April 2008 Mr. Dausabea was convicted of fraudulent conversion before the Honiara Magistrates Court and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. The charge related to government funds disbursed in 2001 and deposited into Mr. Dausabea's bank account. Mr. dausabea has appealed the decision and remains on bail pending the hearing of the appeal.
