Charles Darling, 1st Baron Darling
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charles John Darling, 1st Baron Darling PC (6 December 1849 – 29 May 1936) was a British Conservative politician and judge.
The eldest son of Charles Darling of Langham Hall in Essex, he was a Member of Parliament for Deptford from 1888 to 1897. The latter year he was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Justice. The appointment was widely criticized as he was considered to have given 'no sign of legal eminence'. However, Darling remained in this office until 1923 and became a member of the Privy Council in 1917. In 1924 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Darling, of Langham in the County of Essex. Lord Darling died in May 1936, aged 86, and was succeeded in the barony by his grandson Robert Charles Henry Darling.
