Charles Daniels was a Representative from New York who was born in New York City March 24, 1825. At an early age he was taken to Toledo, Ohio, and learned his father’s trade of shoemaker; moved to Buffalo, N.Y., in 1842, where he studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced practice in Buffalo. He was elected an associate justice of the New York Supreme Court in 1863; appointed by Governor Seymour to hold the office of justice of that court until January 1, 1864, when the term to which he had been elected commenced; twice reelected, and served until December 1891, when he reached the age limit and was retired. He was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1893-March 3, 1897); chairman, Committee on Elections No. 1 (Fifty-fourth Congress). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1896 to the Fifty-fifth Congress. He died in Buffalo, N.Y., December 20, 1897; interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
