Charles Bertie (of Uffington)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charles Bertie (c.1678 – 12 April 1730) was a British politician, the son of Charles Bertie and grandson of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey.
In 1704, he married Mary Narbonne, by whom he had several children, including:[1]
- Charles Bertie (d. 13 September 1754), married Bathsheba Mead, daughter of Richard Mead; had four sons, Charles, Richard, James, and Rev. Montagu, all of whom died without issue
- Norborne Bertie (d. 1779), no issue
- Peregrine Bertie (1709–1777), married Elizabeth Payne in 1736, had several children including Albemarle Bertie, 9th Earl of Lindsey
Bertie was politically active from 1702. After the death of his father in 1711, he succeeded him as Member of Parliament for Stamford, a seat which he held until he was defeated in 1727. He followed Montagu Venables-Bertie, 2nd Earl of Abingdon, his kinsman, in opposition to the French commerce bill but was otherwise a reliable Tory.[2]
