Charles Beattie

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Beattie is a former Northern Ireland Ulster Unionist politician, farmer and auctioneer.

Beattie was an Omagh Rural District Councillor and a Member of Parliament for six months. He unsuccessfully contested the Ulster Mid constituency in the May 1955 general election and the August 1955 by-election. He was, however, declared an elected Member of Parliament by the Northern Ireland High Court on 7 October 1955 after the disqualification of his predecessor, although Beattie did not take his seat. A House of Commons Select Committee recommended his election be declared invalid due to Beattie holding offices of profit under the crown (namely, membership of three Northern Ireland National Insurance and National Assistance Tribunals), and this recommendation was accepted on 7 February 1956.
