Charkhi Dadri is a town and a municipal committee in Bhiwani district in the state of Haryana, India. The town was made by joining the villages of Charki and Dadri after urban development. Charkhi was founded by Dada Bilhan Singh (a Phogat tribal leader), and the name is derived from the local name of old warriors of Jatsangh - kshatriya. Dadri was founded by Raja Bilhan Singh, a younger son of the Maharaja Prithvi Raj Chauhan according to some history books.

Dada Bilhan Singh came to Dadri area in 1384 AD (vikram samwat 1441). He was from Jat Phogat clan of Sanjarwas village and married in a Rajput family of nearby Sanwad village.In later medieval periods, the area came under the sway of Jat kings and in one instance Rani Samakaur daughter of Chaudhary Jawaharsingh was married to Maharaja Jind . The area continued to be ruled by the the Maharaja of Jind till its merger with other territories under Independent India.
Dadri was a lake called Dadar. It is said that one day Dada Bilhansingh came to this area and saw a cow and lion drinking water side by side. One Mahatma Swami Dayal was also there in his Ashram. Bilhansingh asked for Mahatma's blessings and advice. Mahatma advised him to Make this place his home and blessed that his family will rule this place in future. According to a legend he took oath under a Fog or Fig tree and he was called Phogat from that day.
The famous lake Talab Shyamesar and Dayal Temple are still there today.

Dadri is a tehsil with 184 villages and is the largest tehsil in Haryana now. Dadri was also a district (pargana) and state (riyasat) in the past.

As of 2001 India census[1], Charkhi Dadri had a population of 44,892. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Charkhi Dadri has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 76% and female literacy of 62%. 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. Literacy rate in Charkhi Dadri is outcome of efforts made by Mr. Ramkishan Gupta Head of Dadri Education Society running around 3 schools & 7 colleges.

The town is home to an old fort and has four gates (one on each approach), and several temples.

On November 12, 1996, a mid air collision occurred above the town, killing 349 people. More information on the crash can be found here.
