Charge ordering

Charge ordering is second order phase transition that occurs when atoms with different oxidation states form an ordered superlattice .

[edit] Examples of Charge Ordering

Fe3O4 is a mixed oxide where the iron atoms assume a mixture of Fe3+ and Fe2+. Below 120K, the combination of 2+ and 3+ species arrange themselves in a regular pattern, whereas above that transition temperature the thermal energy is great enough that the species are disordered. [1]
