Charge-sustaining

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charge-sustaining is the mode of operation utilized to manage Battery packs in conventional hybrid vehicles. State of charge (SOC) will fluctuate with driving conditions, but a target SOC is usually around 50 to 60 percent. Discharge patterns consist of many shallow discharges which utilize only a portion of the battery pack's chemical energy; a typical range of SOC may be 45% to 75%. A Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle may initially start operating in a charge-depleting mode and then default to a charge-sustaining mode after its all-electric range is exhausted or if the operator neglects to charge it overnight.
