Charax

Charax may be:

  • the Greek word for "pallisade," and the proper name of numerous fortified towns, including:
    • Charax Sidae, somewhere near Seleucia in Mesopotamia
    • Charax Spasinou, somewhere in the Tigris/Euphrates/Karun delta at the head of the Persian Gulf
    • Charax Medea, in Upper Media, not far from present-day Tehran, Iran
    • Charax Crimea, close to the present-day Gaspra, Ukraine
  • Charax is also:
    • Charax, a genus of fishes in the family Characidae
    • Charax, a sharp-witted character in Marcus Aurelius' Meditations
    • Charax of Pergamum, properly Aulus Claudius Charax, a 2nd century Roman military tribune and author of a forty-volume Hellenica
