Characters in Austin Powers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Austin Powers (Mike Myers) - A British secret agent cryogenically frozen in 1967 and defrosted in 1997 in order to battle his arch enemy, Dr. Evil. Austin embodies all that is groovy in 1960s Britain and is irresistible to women, even when he experiences culture shock after being tossed into 1997, and even when he loses his 'mojo' (the mystical libido-enhancing secret to Powers' sexual success) in the second film.

  • Basil Exposition is a fictional character portrayed by Michael York. Basil works for British Intelligence in an indeterminate role as Austin Powers' controller. A flashback in the movie Austin Powers in Goldmember shows Basil as attending the Intelligence Academy at the same time as Austin Powers, Dr. Evil and Number 2. Even as a schoolboy Basil wore a carnation in his button-hole. Basil comes up with all kinds of gadgets to help Austin complete the mission. He is a parody of the Q and M characters from the Bond series, and his surname ('Exposition') is a play on a common movie convention, 'exposition', which is the conveyance of critical elements of plot through dialogue. Originally presented as being somewhat obsequious towards Austin, in the second and third movies he has been rather more authoritative and competent.

Mark Kermode the film critic often uses the phrase "Basil Exposition Moment" to describe any part in a movie where one of the characters describes in overly clear and simplified terms a part of the plot for the benefit of the audience.

Foreign Language Versions
  • French (France): Felicity Bonnebaise (bonne baise, good fuck)
  • Italian: Felicity Ladà (La dà, (she) gives it).
  • Spanish: Marifé Lación (Marifé is the short for María de la Fe - Mary of the Faith -; Joining fe and lación we obtain felación, which is the Spanish for fellatio).
  • German: Felicity Schickfick (schicker fick, good fuck)

Note: In Latin America Felicity's name was not translated (she keep the "Felicity Shagwell" name), the dub is only in Spain.

[edit] Minor Characters

  • Mrs. Kensington (Mimi Rogers) - Austin's original side-kick in the 1960s. Although Austin has a soft spot for her, she is married to another man. She is the mother of Vanessa Kensington. The character is a spoof of Mrs. Emma Peel character from the television series The Avengers.
  • Number 3 (The Mole) (Fred Savage) - An undercover agent who infiltrates Dr. Evil's organization and becomes Number 3, assistant to Number 2. He is painfully aware of the irony that he is both a mole and that he also has a large mole above his lip. Unfortunately both Austin Powers and Dr. Evil cannot resist commenting on his facial feature. Number 3 succeeds in getting Mini-Me to defect from Dr. Evil's organization after his displacement by Scott.
  • Radar Operator Johnson Ritter (Clint Howard) - Appears in all three movies but only has a few lines in each. Johnson is the one who spots Dr. Evil's spacecraft, the outlines of which are always shown in great clarity on his radar screen.
  • The President (Tim Robbins) - Appears only in the second movie and is president during the 1960s. Folds to Doctor Evil's demands after seeing him play a clip from Independence Day, to show them what his laser could do, and the country had to pay $100 billion.
  • Commander Gilmour/General Hawk (Charles Napier) - An American Army officer who appears in the first film as Commander Gilmour and in the second film as General Hawk, though there is no real distinction from the characters aside from name. In the first movie he is there to brief Austin on his mission and expresses doubt that he can do it; in the second movie, he is the advisor to the President. Possible reference to Jo Don Baker who played two characters being Gen. Brad Whitaker and Ex-CIA operative Jack Wade from James Bond films 'The Living Daylights', 'Goldeneye', and 'Tomorrow' Never Dies.

[edit] Villains

  • Number 2 (Robert Wagner, Rob Lowe) - Dr. Evil's most trusted ally. Number 2 is a parody of Emilio Largo, Ernst Stavro Blofeld's right-hand man. They share a distinctive eyepatch, and are both called mostly by their codename "Number 2", which they share. Rob Lowe portrays a younger Number 2 in the second film in the series, as well as in a flashback in the third film. Number 2 is incinerated in the first movie but reappears in the second with facial burns which heal completely as of the third film.
Foreign Language Versions
  • Spanish: Spain: Frau Kaput.
  • Scott Evil (Seth Green) - The son of Dr. Evil, he believed he was created in a laboratory test tube. However, a family feud on the Jerry Springer Show reveals that he is the offspring of Dr. Evil and Frau Farbissina. Scott in the films is the result of an implied difficult childhood and fails to bond with Dr. Evil. He makes several suggestions to improve his father's over-elaborate plans but has his advice constantly rejected. In the third film he suddenly turns evil and wants to take over when his father dies, when Dr. Evil is arrested, and at the end of the third film said the line that Dr Evil had said at the end of the first and second movie - "I'm gonna get you, Austin Powers!", referencing the currently unnamed fourth movie, to be released November 14, 2008.
  • Mini-Me (Verne Troyer) - Dr. Evil's 1:8 clone who first appears in the second film. The silent Mini-Me is always there for Dr. Evil through the roughest times, except when he takes Austin's side later in the trilogy. The little clone has frequent conflicts with Scott Evil, but loves chocolate and Mini Mr. Bigglesworth (the mini clone of Dr. Evil's cat, mysteriously absent from third film). He is a reference to Bond villain sidekick Nick Nack. The Character also bears resemblance to a character in The Island of Dr. Moreau Dr. Moreau had a small lemur-like character side kick that dressed the same as he did and did not talk. The fact that he was cloned from Dr. Evil could also be a reference to the James Bond film " Diamonds Are Forever" in which Blofeld (Charles Gray) has his appearance duplicated several times by giving plastic surgery to several of his henchmen to bear his resemblance in order to avoid capture.
  • Fat Bastard (Mike Myers) - An extremely obese (2240 lb.) Scottish henchman of Dr. Evil. In the second movie, he steals Austin's "mojo." But his greatest accomplishment, aside from infiltrating the Ministry of Defence as a piper, is becoming a famous sumo wrestler. A parody of minor 'hench' characters from many James Bond movies, most of which have unusual names (such as Oddjob and Jaws). However, Fat Bastard loses a lot of weight by the end of the third movie, a self-reported 180lbs (seemingly contradicting previously attributed information, as when first introduced, Dr. Evil's description of him says "he weighs a metric tonne" however this could be a hyperbole rather than fact), leaving him with a lot of excess skin, and a neck that he says resembles a vagina. A possible indirect reference to Sean Connery himself.
  • Johann van der Smut, or Goldmember (Mike Myers) - A parody of Bond villain Auric Goldfinger, he has a fetish for gold. He got his nickname after losing his genitalia in an "unfortunate smelting accident" (not specified). He tries to help Dr. Evil pull a gold meteor into the Earth via tractor beam, he created the cold fusion power unit. The Dr. himself finds Goldmember's strange habits disturbing: Goldmember is obsessed with eating his own flaking skin. Van der Smut is a stereotypical Dutchman, often mispronouncing words of the English language, most notably when he tries to say "father," but pronounces it as "fahzjha". He could also be a parody of James Bond when he tried to impersonate a Dutchman while apprehending Peter Franks, a diamond smuggler outside Tiffany Case's apt in Amsterdam (Diamonds Are Forever)
  • Mr. Bigglesworth - Mr. Bigglesworth is Dr. Evil's cat. In a parody of the feline pet of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, he starts out as a white Persian, but owing to an unfreezing error by henchman Mustafa, loses all his hair. The hairless version is actually a Sphynx cat (SGC Belfry Ted Nude-Gent). While frozen in Dr. Evil's cyrogenic chamber he appears stuck to the window like a suction cup Garfield toy.

  • Alotta Fagina (Fabiana Udenio) - Number 2's Italian confidential, private secretary. She was able to seduce Austin and (unlike the fembots) had sex with him. She later reappears in Dr. Evil's lair and threatens to kill Vanessa Kensington, but is forced to flee when the lair begins to self-destruct. Her ultimate fate is ambiguous, though Basil Exposition explains in a deleted scene that, after the events of the movie, Alotta had changed her name because of the inconvenience it caused her; her new name is "Sandy Fagina."

Alotta's name is a parody of Bond girl Pussy Galore from the James Bond novel Goldfinger but her character is based on SPECTRE assassin Fiona Volpe from Thunderball. Owing to the explicit sexual reference of her name, some American television screenings (TBS and Fox Network) use alternate footage in which the character's name is changed to Alotta Cleavaga (pronounced Cleave-va-jay). Recent TBS rebroadcasts, however, have restored the original version of the name.

  • Fembots - Highly sexy female androids made by Frau Farbissina to seduce and kill Austin. Later in the film Austin is seduced but able to counter them by doing an overly sex-charged striptease. Going beyond the sex limit of the fembots, making their heads explode. Possible reference to Blofeld's 'dolls' from On Her Majesty's Secret Service or the all female Octopuss Cult in Octopussy.
  • Mustafa (played by Will Ferrell) was a Turkish or Egyptian henchman of Dr. Evil. He was recognizable by his red fez and was extremely difficult if not impossible to kill. He was a notable assistant, for he designs the cryogenic freezing process that preserves Dr. Evil for 30 years. This process, however, caused Mr. Bigglesworth to lose his hair, so Dr. Evil burned him alive. He survived this, but was subsequentially shot twice by another henchman sent by Dr. Evil to shut him up, and it is only assumed that he finally died. Possibly based on the fez wearing minor character in the bond film Diamonds Are Forever that gets knocked out by James Bond (played by Sean Connery) in the opening credits or Fekkesh from The Spy Who Loved Me.

He is known for placing a charm from his charm bracelet on the dead bodies of his victims and worries that Scotland Yard is "always after me lucky charms." He is eventually killed when Austin drowns him in a Las Vegas casino bathroom toilet. He is a parody of Red Grant, the assassin in the Bond film From Russia with Love.
  • Random Task (Joe Son) - Dr. Evil's Korean assassin in the first movie. Direct parody of Oddjob in the Bond movie Goldfinger but throws a shoe instead of a steel-brimmed bowler hat. He was last seen when Austin used his penis-enlarger pump on him, distracting him long enough for Vanessa to knock him on the head with a glass bottle.
  • Robin Swallows (née Spitz) (Gia Carides) - An employee of Dr. Evil, who encounters Austin in his apartment during a party. Her fate is a direct parody of that of Fiona Volpe (Luciana Paluzzi) in the movie Thunderball. Much like Mustafa, she is impossible to kill, even after being knifed in the back, shot with a machine gun, blasted with a rocket launcher, and knocked off of a high building.
  • Una Brau (Mary Jo Smith) A character that does not speak and is only seen in one scene of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. She met Frau Farbissina on the LPGA tour and they fell in love. She has a unibrow and in the movie's credits her name is given as Unibrow but in the dialogue it is pronounced Una Brau.

Foxxy Cleopatra and Austin go to him for information where Nigel was taken but he says he does not know. Later, he finishes the tractor beam early and demands a raise, but instead is dumped into a pit of sharks with lasers on their heads (where he obviously dies) by Scott and Doctor Evil. His name (and one of the scenes he appears in) directly reference Mr. Roboto, the song by Styx
