In the fictional universe of LEGO BIONICLE, multiple species, races, and other groups exist. Some are good, some are pure evil, and some just work for whoever pays the most. This list of groups covers every race, species, and group within the universe; it also covers individuals that do not neatly fit into any group. They are sorted by alignment.

[edit] The Matoran Race

The Matoran are the chosen people of the Great Spirit Mata Nui[1] and the most common race in the Bionicle world. Though most of the time "Matoran" refers to small workers, it can be extended to the warrior Toa and elder Turaga that Matoran can sometimes become. Regardless, all wear Kanohi Masks and have some degree of elemental power.

[edit] Matoran

Main article: Matoran

The Matoran are a race of small workers. Their elemental energies manifest as minor physical enhancements, and they cannot activate the powers of Kanohi Masks that they wear (most wear masks with no powers at all). Though they are among the weakest races, they are a very brave people and will fight to the last for their homes and lives. They make up for their physical disadvantages by being builders; able to create fortresses, weapons, defense machines and whatever other tools they need. The Matoran live by the three virtues that Mata Nui gave them: Unity, Duty, and Destiny.

Several Matoran have played prominent roles in the storyline; profiles for all of these can be found at List of Matoran:

  • Jaller, Kapura, Takua, Hahli, Macku, Kotu, Kongu, Tamaru, Hewkii, Hafu, Nuparu, Onepu, Taipu, Matoro, and Kopeke all helped support the Toa on Mata Nui.
  • Nuhrii, Vhisola, Orkahm, Ahkmou, Tehutti, and Ehrye found Great Kanoka Disks on Metru Nui and aided the Toa Metru in retrieving them.
  • Balta, Dalu, Piruk, Velika, Garan, and Kazi worked with the Toa Inika to drive the Piraka from Voya Nui.
  • Sarda, Idris, Kyrehx, Defilak, Dekar, and Gar are some of the Matoran from Mahri Nui who were working against the Barraki.
  • Tanma, Solek and Photok have currently been trying to fight the Makuta, while Radiak, Gavla, Kirop and Vican are aiding the Makuta.

[edit] Toa

Certain Matoran are destined to become Toa; heroic warriors of great stength and power. It is Toa who defend the Matoran when they cannot defend themselves. They usually work together in teams, with one member representing each of the six most common elements (fire, earth, stone, air, water, and ice). Each Toa has near-complete control over their element, and can access the powers of the more powerful Great Kanohi Masks.

The major Toa teams are:

  • The Toa Nuva: Tahu, Gali, Lewa, Pohatu, Onua and Kopaka(originally called just "the Toa" before transforming into their Nuva forms; it is now known that they were known as the Toa Mata before their transformation.) Later in the storyline, the Toa Nuva were delivered into Karda Nui, the core of the universe. Kopaka, Lewa and Pohatu are teamed up as 'Phantoka' in the sky. Tahu, Onua and Gali are teamed up as 'Mistika' in the swamps.
  • The Toa Metru: Vakama, Nokama, Matau, Onewa, Whenua, and Nuju (who were mutated into beastly Toa Hordika for a time), now serving as Turaga for Metri Nui.
  • The Toa Mahri: Jaller, Hahli, Kongu, Hewkii, Nuparu, and formerly Matoro (formerly the Toa Inika)

For profiles on these characters, please see List of Toa.

Other prominent Toa include Jovan, Krakua, Lesovikk, Lhikan, Nidhiki, Takanuva,Tuyet and Ignika. Also see "Rahaga" below, who were once the 'Toa Hagah' before getting mutated by Roodaka.

[edit] Turaga

When a Toa fulfills his/her destiny, they may have to choose to give up their power for the greater good. When this happens, they turn into Turaga, elders that use the wisdom they gained as Toa to lead the Matoran. Their elemental powers are minimal and rarely used, and they can access the powers of weaker Noble Kanohi Masks.

Known Turaga include Vakama, Nokama, Matau, Onewa, Whenua, Nuju, Dume, Lhikan, Jovan.

[edit] Rahaga

Once an elite team of Toa Hagah, the six Rahaga were mutated into a small, bestial state by Roodaka. They have since become master hunter-trappers and Rahi tamers. They sought to aid any land conquered by the Visorak, and helped the Toa Hordika when the Visorak took over Metru Nui. A recent event in the storyline has seen the Rahaga restored to their Toa Hagah forms.

The six Rahaga were Norik, Gaaki, Iruini, Pouks, Bomonga, and Kualus.

[edit] Mata Nui

The Great Spirit Mata Nui is the guardian of the universe, and represents all that is good. He is said to have brought the Matoran out of darkness and given them the three virtues of Unity, Duty, and Destiny. Unfortunately, a "spell" from the Makuta of Metru Nui has rendered him unconscious and unable to attend to the universe's well-being.

The Great Spirit Mata Nui is not to be confused with the island of Mata Nui, named in the Great Spirit's honor.

[edit] Great Beings

Matoran legend says that the Great Spirit Mata Nui was sent by the even more powerful Great Beings. Almost nothing is known about them, but where Mata Nui is said to protect the universe, the Great Beings are said to create universes. Since putting Mata Nui in charge, they have not paid much attention to this universe and are unaware that Mata Nui is unconscious and dying.

The Great Beings have left behind several artifacts and beings for specific purposes; such beings include Umbra, the Bohrok, and the Bahrag.

[edit] Order of Mata Nui

Main article: Order of Mata Nui

While the Toa are well-known throughout the world as heroes serving the will of Mata Nui, there is also a secret society to serve his will covertly. The Order is so secret that very few know that it even exists.

The Order's known members are Axonn and Botar; in addition, the Order also uses a group of Maxilos robots as guards. A third member, Hydraxon, was killed in action; though there is now a second Hydraxon existing who believes he is the original. Brutaka was once a member but has since been expelled for betrayal.

The leader of the order is Helryx, the first toa of water. The main base for order is in Daxia.

There are other members like Triuma, 9foot tall warrior, and Jebraz, Johmak, Tobduk, creators of BIONICLE World atlas.

[edit] Hand of Artahka

The Hand of Artahka were as you may describe, the first edition of the Order of Mata Nui. They later dispersed realising that after the arrival of Toa, the Hand was disorganised and rather undisciplined. They later reformed as the secret society of the Order of Mata Nui. Known members of the Hand included Axonn, Brutaka and Shadow Stealer.

[edit] Artakha

Artakha is a mysterious, reclusive place which legend says contains the contentment of all Matoran. Due to its never being discovered, many Matoran has claimed it nothing more than a myth.

However, recently, Toa Nuva have been teleported to Arthakha. The island is real. It is ruled by a being, Artakha himself.

[edit] Evil

[edit] Brotherhood of Makuta

The Brotherhood of Makuta are a sect of evil and sadistic shapeshifters who once served Mata Nui and protected the Matoran on his behalf. They are among the most powerful beings in the Bionicle Universe. Though they once served Mata Nui, they have been corrupted under the command of their leader, Teridax. Each Makuta has a land to rule and watch over, and they all share the same powers. Consumed by pride, ambition and greed, they sought to enslave the Matoran and conquer the universe. They cast Mata Nui into the coma in which he currently languishes through use of a potent magical spell (some say it was actually a virus).

Over centuries, the group continues this work while remaining comparatively meagre in numbers. At one point the Brotherhood of Makuta allied itself with the Dark Hunters. However, this did not last immensely long. After an attempt to capture Metru Nui, the Shadowed One, leader of the Dark Hunters conflicted with Makuta leading ultimately to the Dark Hunter-Brotherhood War. Although the Brotherhood of Makuta did make Mata Nui fall into an unending slumber, they secretly plan to awaken him. How this will benefit the Brotherhood is unknown but it is known that if the Brotherhood succeed in their plan they will rule the world and plunge it into total darkness.

The Makuta is also the name of a species of powerful being who evolved past the point of needing bodies and soon formed the Brotherhood. The name Makuta soon became a title given to members of the Brotherhood although they are not all Makuta.

All members of the Brotherhood share certain powers. Shape-shifting, shadow energy, and the ability of creating kraata, a wormlike entity that can take control of inanimate objects. Each of them also possesses unique powers of their own.

Makuta is organising a strike force that was recently dispatched to Karda Nui to secure it for the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is formed of many armies and pawns, which are led by members of the Makuta species. The Brotherhood's main armies consist of the Rahkshi, and the Visorak, armour controlled by kraata and spider-creatures, respectively. The Brotherhood's other servants include Exo-Toa, several Rahi, and Dark Hunters that have defected over to the Brotherhood's side including many more mutated beings. The Brotherhood's former servants include traitors such as Roodaka, former allies such as the Toa Hagah and the Dark Hunters, and Brotherhood weapons given to the Dark Hunters such as Voporak.

Over the years, the Brotherhood of Makuta has launched numerous attempts of conquest ranging from the capture of Metru Nui to infecting Mata Nui with a virus, though those ones have failed besides many others.

Because they have evolved past the point of needing bodies they appear to be immortal but are not indestructible and exhibit a great vulnerability to light energy. All Makuta seen so far in the series are manipulative, egocentric, power hungry and vicious and share a dry, cruel sense of humour.

Known Makuta include:

  • Teridax: Also known as The Makuta of Metru Nui or simply, The Makuta, Teridax is the main antagonist of the series and former leader of the Brotherhood. When the name Makuta is used it is usually to refer to him. Teridax came up with the idea that someone could rule the world aside from Mata Nui, and thus devised a master plan so brilliant that it could indeed work. Teridax was the Makuta of Metru Nui, and was known only by his title to most. He was thought to be destroyed by Takanuva, but in actuality clung to life as pure energy. He recently took possession of a robotic drone named Maxilos. Teridax formerly wore the Kanohi Kraahkan prior to the descruction of his physical form and wielded the Staff of Shadows in combat. After his "body" was destroyed his mask was then claimed by Makuta Icarax. Teridax despite his sociopathic and narcissistic tendencies seems to believe that his actions are for the good of the universe. However he possesses no scruples and has an unshakeable belief that it is his right to rule creation and re-make it in his image. Teridax is cunning and one of the most intelligent beings in the Bionicle universe though he has a tendency to be arrogant and overconfident which could contribute to his eventual defeat. Teridax is reputed for being a master tactician, having plans for every possible contingency of any situation, planning everything perfectly, from the sleep of Mata Nui to the death (and the saving) of the same, even his own temporary defeat at the hands of Takanuva. The running joke among that Brotherhood is that he even has a backup plan for his breakfast.
  • Miserix: The former leader of the Brotherhood. He was highly intelligent and possessed the ability to transform into fearsome reptilian creatures. When he refused to go along with Teridax's plan, Teridax had Miserix killed and took his place as leader of the Brotherhood. The masks of all the deceased Makuta who refused to go along with Teridax's plans are nailed to the wall of their conference room. Miserix's is a notable exception.
  • Antroz- The leader of the Makuta group in Karda Nui. Unlike most Makuta, Antroz does not underestimate a foe. However, Antroz is prone to attacking his enemies in close mêlée combat as much as he respects them, rather than make use of his more-than-able wings and his darkness abilities. Although he is a seasoned fighter and powerful warrior, he is also a shortsighted commander who likes planning as much as sleeping with mutant Hydruka. All of the trio that went to Karda Nui spread darkness as they fly. The three Makuta mutated three Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran to act as their "eyes," with Antroz choosing Radiak to act as his. he has the Kanohi Jutlin, the Great Mask of Corruption.
  • Chirox- The planner and inventor of the three, Chirox creates Rahi that are devastating and dangerous at will and with relish. He is less fighter than Antroz, but is known to fight dirty using many means to win. Like the other Makuta attempting to conquer Karda Nui, he can fly.
  • Vamprah- is a silent hunter, therefore chooses to be mute. He loves to slowly track and kill his foes. Vamprah is even feared by the other Brotherhood of Makuta members. He is armed with hooks claws and razor-sharp wing knives, and can literally feed on the hope and feelings of others. Another weapon he has is a Tridax Pod carrying four shadow leeches. He wears an Avsa Mask of Hunger, which drains (at his choice) light, energy, or positive emotions from a target at a distance. He preference is latter most of the time, but will drain energy if he's in combat. He is partnered with Gavla who can send enemies off balance and cause vertigo.[2]
  • Mutran- A mad scientist character, Mutran loves to create new, vicious Rahi. However, he is just as cruel, killing them a second later if there is a flaw in them. A scientist, Mutran isn't a warrior but isn't hesitant to fight, and was known to create the Shadow Leeches, the Mountain, and the Blade Burrowers. He was part of the Karda Nui invasion force, and a "Phantoka", though prior to that he was known as the Makuta of the Central Southern Continent. He is armed with a Shadow Spear and Blade, a Tridax Pod and Kanohi Shelek, and has a partner Shadow Matoran Vican, who serves as lab assistant.
  • Gorast- Like all Makuta, Gorast once worked solely on creating new Rahi. Gorast is the ruler of the Tren Krom Peninsula, was the Makuta that made and conquered the Visorak hordes, and is designated as "The Mistress of the Acid Falls." Upon Makuta Teridax's rebellion, Gorast and Bitil were the first to side with him. On Teridax's order, Gorast and Icarax hunted down and killed the Makuta who had initially defended Miserix.
  • Bitil-Bitil and Gorast where the first to side with Teridax when he took over the Brotherhood of Makuta. Bitil was also the first Makuta to notice the changes that came with their evolution into pure energy. Bitil has two twin Vahki-like staffs and wears the Mask of Duplication. He also has wings, though bulkier than Gorast's, and a Nynrah Ghostblaster with green ammo.
  • Krika- He strikes from the mist like a phantom, appearing and disappearing at will. He has venomous fangs and Nynrah ghost blaster. Krika is the strangest and the most ruthless enemy the Toa Nuva have ever faced. Krika is one of the three Makuta that will be released to fight Tahu Nuva, Gali Nuva, and Onua Nuva. Krika is in the Swamp of Secrets. Krika may be the largest Makuta Mistika to date. The Makuta has a green Nynrah Ghostblaster, and a lot of blades.
  • Spiriah- Spiriah was a rogue member of the Brotherhood of Makuta, and was assigned to the island of Zakaz. He was known for giving the Skakdi their elemental and eye vision powers. The Skakdi went mad with power and banished him from the island. Since this failure, the Brotherhood of Makuta were loooking for him him.Spiriah wore the Kanohi Jutlin, the Great Mask of Corruption. His weapons included a Midak Skyblaster and a Tridax Pod. He also had sharp claws and poisonous fangs.
  • Icarax- Icarax was the Makuta of Karzahni, and was one of the most experienced Makuta in battle. Icarax had a reputation as one of the fiercest and most skilled warriors in the Brotherhood, and even his fellow Makuta were reluctant to call on him. Icarax wore the Kanohi Kraahkan, the Mask of Shadows. He was equipped with a Tridax Pod, rotating blades, and a large, double bladed sword.
  • Kojol- Kojol was a Makuta, and was assigned to the Artakha area. He was highly secretive, never revealing his knowledge to even his fellow Makuta, not even the location of Artakha. 1,500 years before the Great Cataclysm, he led a strike force of Rahkshi and Visorak into Artakha and stole the Kanohi Mask of Light, so that the Brotherhood of Makuta could ensure no Toa of Light ever came to be. Kojol was killed when, in response to the Brotherhood's attack, the Ruler of Artakha asked the Order of Mata Nui to destroy all maps with Artakha on them and kill anyone who knew its location.

[edit] Rahkshi

Fierce warriors transformed from sluglike creatures called Kraata, which can be produced by all Brotherhood members. Rahkshi are destroyers by nature and will not stop until they complete their mission, making even Makuta reluctant to unleash them.

There are forty-two kinds of Rahkshi, but only six have been given names: Turahk, Guurahk, Lerahk, Panrahk, Vorahk, and Kurahk.

[edit] Visorak

The Brotherhood controlled an army of Visorak; spider-like creatures that were commanded by Sidorak and Roodaka. The Visorak, or "stealers of life" as they are known, are dangerous creatures that spin webs to trap prey. However, it is far worse to be infected with their venom, which mutates the victim into a monstrous beast.

The Visorak hordes disbanded after a betrayal of Roodaka's led to Sidorak's death. However, the Brotherhood has been able to re-form some of the armies.

The main breeds of Visorak are Vohtarak, Boggarak, Keelerak, Roporak, Oohnorak, and Suukorak; and there is also an elite breed called Kahgarak.

A stone called The Heart of the Visorak assembles Visorak no matter how far.

[edit] Dark Hunters

The Dark Hunters are an organization of bounty hunters. Led by the Shadowed One, an ancient being of formidable power, the Dark Hunters are generally evil, but they will work for whoever pays the most, regardless of what side they're on.

The most prominent members of the Dark Hunters are the Shadowed One, Sentrakh, Voporak, Lariska, Nidhiki, and Krekka. The former Viceroy of the Visorak, Roodaka, has also had extensive dealings with the Hunters.Other Dark Hunters are Amphibax,Ancient,Charger,Conjurer,Eliminator,Firedracax,Gladiator,Guardian,Lurker,Poison,Primal Prototype,Ravager,Savage,Seeker,Shadow Stealer,Spinner,Subterranean,Tracker,Tyrant, and Vanisher

[edit] Piraka

Main article: Piraka

The Piraka are a group of Skakdi who abandoned the Dark Hunters to search for the Mask of Life and claim it for themselves. However, each one plans to betray the others and take sole possession of the mask. They have come to the island of Voya Nui, where the mask is hidden, and have enslaved most of the Matoran living there. After the Toa Inika claimed the Mask of Life and freed the Matoran, the Piraka are now biding their time and waiting for their chance to strike.

The Piraka are Hakann, Vezok, Zaktan, Avak, Reidak, and Thok; a being spawned from Vezok named Vezon is considered a "seventh Piraka" but operates independently. Related to the Piraka is Irnakk, a monster from Skakdi mythology, who is brought to life to guard the Ignika.

[edit] Barraki

The Barraki are powerful warlords who led a military alliance called the League of the Six Kingdoms in conquests until the Order of Mata Nui banished them to a prison known as the Pit. Now that the Pit has flooded and become part of the ocean, the Barraki have mutated into forms like those of sea monsters and formed new armies of local aquatic life. With the Mask of Life entering their domain, they seek to use it to return to their air-breathing forms and re-conquer the surface world.

The Barraki are Kalmah, Takadox, Ehlek, Carapar, Mantax, and Pridak. They also have a neighbour named Nocturn who was sent to the pit because of breaking his island in to two.

Carapar was killed when he tried to attack Tren Krom while traveling with Brutaka and his group. Tren Krom shot an energy bolt from his eye that reduced Carapar to a mere pile of fragments.

[edit] Karzahni

Karzahni was the tyrannical ruler of a hellish domain where Matoran who worked poorly were sent to. According to ancient legend, Matoran once laboured in darkness, but thoses who excelled at their tasks were sent to Artakha where they would work in the light. If Matoran laboured poorly in Artakha, they would be sentenced to the realm of Karzahni who had the power to make the victim see an alternate future, usually a frightening one. Six Matoran captured (not sentenced) escaped but in that encounter, Karzahni learned of the Great Spirit Mata Nui and Makuta, beings who Karzahni would have neither known nor cared about. Deciding to seize power, Karzahni rose from his realm into Mahri Nui and there did battle with Toa Lessivok and later Teridax who vanquished the tyrant by tearing his mind to shreds. Karzahni was later banished to the Pit by Botar. Since then, his kingdom has been destroyed and the Matoran freed. Karzahni carried a flaming chain and a mask with the appearance of four welded together.

[edit] Tren Krom

Tren Krom is a fictional character in LEGO's Bionicle franchise. He was a powerful entity created by the Great Beings to take care of the Matoran Universe but when he was no longer needed and the time came for him to relinquish his post, Krom had developed a taste for power and was unwilling to relinquish his dominion over the Universe so the Great Beings imprisoned him on an island in the South for defying them. He, like the similar character Irnakk, is widely regarded to be nothing more than a myth by most of the Universe, a story made up to frighten children into behaving but few dare approach his island.

In The Mutran Chronicles, it is revealed that prior to the events of the Bionicle story, the Brotherhood of Makuta (a sect of evil shapeshifters who play the role of the main antagonist in Bionicle) sent Mutran to Krom's island to learn if he was a threat. Krom proved to be an an unspeakably malignant being while his mind was even more terrifying than his appearance. Upon meeting Mutran, Krom looked into his mind and discovered something in there that interested him though Mutran himself was quite oblivious to whatever that might have been. Nevertheless the usually fearless Mutran was driven slightly mad by his encounter with Krom. Mutran was quite deranged even before his meeting with Krom but the encounter did nothing for his sanity (or lack thereof). When Krom looked into Mutran's mind, Mutran saw into his and gained a greater understanding of the Universe and gave the knowledge he had acquired to Makuta Teridax, the arch-villain of Bionicle, who using the information Mutran had given him, formulated the idea of overthrowing the Great Spirit Mata Nui, setting the events of the story in motion.

According to Bionicle author Greg Farshtey, Tren Krom was inspired by the character Cthulhu from HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Krom is said to be so hideous that too look upon him causes madness, a common Lovecraft plot-device. Mutran is presumably the only character in the story other than the Great Beings to have met Tren Krom in person and describes him as having a face covered in barbed tentacles though he remembers little else. He also comments that Krom has a voice so terrifying that it makes Teridax's voice sound "lilting and sweet."

[edit] Neutral

[edit] Rahi

Rahi is the Matoran word of "wildlife". Many different species of Rahi exist, all in different shapes and sizes.

Famous individual Rahi include Fenrakk, Ka, Kardas, Krahka, Keetongu, the Rahi Nui, Pewku, and Tahtorak.

[edit] Bohrok

Mechanical, beetle-like creatures, the Bohrok are a race of drones driven by Krana. Existing only to serve the will of the Bahrag, Cahdok and Gahdok, they will do anything and everything to fulfill the mission of cleaning the island of Mata Nui. Unfortunately, Makuta woke them early and they began this "cleaning" job while Matoran were still living there. The Toa Nuva stopped this rampage, but then had to face six elite Bohrok-Kal that tried to release the swarms again after the Bohrok-Kal stole the Toa's elemental powers.

Now that the island is uninhabited, the Bohrok are now free to fulfill their duties.

  • The six main breeds of Bohrok are Tahnok, Gahlok, Lehvak, Pahrak, Nuhvok, and Kohrak.
  • The main breeds are helped by Bohrok Va: Tahnok Va, Gahlok Va, Lehvak Va, Pahrak Va, Nuhvok Va and Kohrak Va.
  • One of each breed has been mutated into an elite Bohrok-Kal: Tahnok-Kal, Gahlok-Kal, Lehvak-Kal, Pahrak-Kal, Nuhvok-Kal, and Kohrak-Kal. The Bohrok-Kal were destroyed before they could re-release the swarms, but their Krana-Kal survived.

[edit] Vahki

Vahki were robots designed to be the enforcers of order on Metru Nui. They cannot be reasoned with and they will not listen to excuses; those chased by the Vahki only have the options of "surrender or run".

Most Vahki were destroyed in the Great Cataclysm, and the rest fell in the following Visorak invasion.

There are six different models of Vahki for each of the city's metru(districts): Nuurakh, Bordakh, Vorzakh, Zadakh, Rorzakh, and Keerakh. Also, there are two elite types of Vahki, the Kranua and the Kraahu; and a group of failed Kralhi prototypes ('Nuparu's folly', as Nuju later put it.)'

[edit] Kralhi

Kralhi were robotic entities that were made as an enforcement squad before the Vahki were created. They, like Vahki were extremely hard to make excuses and reason with and punished Matoran wrongdoers. This way of punishing was sending a bubble of energy at the misbehaving Matoran and thus weakening him or her by draining his/her energy. Turaga Dume decided to retire these from service due to the fact that victims of the Kralhi were rendered to weak to work. However, the Kralhi flatly refused to be shut down and many went into hiding. The Kralhi were used before the Vahki were created.
