Char-Man's Cave

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Char-Man's cave is a cave located in Ojai, California near Camp Ramah.[1] The cave used to be an old silver mine but has collapsed in certain areas, and has been blocked off in parts by concrete blocks.

The name Char-Man (or Charman) refers to an urban legend of Camp Ramah. The legend is that there was a camp counselor who was teased by campers. The campers taunted the counselor and set him on fire. The burned counselor thus got the name "Char-Man." Char-Man went running from the camp on fire and settled in a nearby water filled cave, now known as Char-Man's cave. Char-Man is said to live deep in the cave but comes out to terrorize the campers.

The legend says that Char-Man likes chicken, and campers bring left over chicken from dinner and leave it in the cave for him to appease him. In the campers come back the next day, and Char-Man approves of the left chicken, Char-Man will leave yellow plastic (the origins of why Char-Man leaves yellow plastic are not known). Char-Man is said to steal socks of campers while they are sleeping.

Camp counselors have been known to bring campers to the cave late at night, and have another counselor near the cave make sounds and scare the campers to further continue the urban legend.
