Chapters of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia

In the history of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity there have been three types of chapters: alumni, professional, and collegiate. While both alumni and professional chapters had at one point or another the authority to initiate new members into the Fraternity, neither of these classes of chapters exist today. Thus, when a person refers to a chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, he or she is most likely referring to a collegiate chapter. A collegiate chapter is a local unit formed by the granting of a charter to a petitioning group at a university, college, or school of music.[1] The institution that houses a chapter is referred to in the Fraternity's National Constitution as the chapter's sheltering institution.

Prior to the formation of a chapter, a group of interested men at an institution that meets the requirements for a sheltering institution must petition for recognition as a colony, which is the designation given to a developing chapter. The only basic requirement for a potential sheltering institution is that it offer a bachelor's degree in any field of music, but even that requirement may be waived by the National Executive Committee.[2] Also, if an institution previously housed a chapter that was expelled from the Fraternity for any reason, no colony can be formed at that institution for at least seven years from the date of the expulsion.[3] After a colony is recognized and then completes all aspects of the Fraternity's Colony Program it may be approved to receive a chapter charter.

[edit] Naming Conventions

Like those of many other Greek-letter fraternities, chapters of Phi Mu Alpha have names consisting of either one or two Greek letters. The names are issued in alphabetical order according to the dates on which the chapters are chartered. For instance, Alpha is the name given to the founding chapter, followed by Beta for the second chapter, then Gamma, and so on. Once the Greek alphabet had been exhausted by using single letters, two-letter names began to be issued, starting with Alpha Beta, then Alpha Gamma, then Alpha Delta, etc. The name Alpha Alpha was reserved to designate the chapter of initiation for men upon whom National Honorary membership is conferred. Other than the honorary Alpha Alpha Chapter, no other two-letter chapter name consists of identical Greek letters.

In the first cycle of chapter naming, letters that came before the first letter of a chapter's name in the Greek alphabet were not used for the second letter. Thus, after Alpha Omega the next name issued was Beta Gamma, not Beta Alpha. Likewise, after Beta Omega, the next name issued was Gamma Delta; Gamma Alpha and Gamma Beta were not used. Using this system, 300 names could be generated, but due to the Fraternity's rapid expansion in the mid 20th century all of the possible names were exhausted in 1969. Beginning in that year (after the last name possible under the old system, Psi Omega, was issued), the Fraternity began to issue the unused two-letter names beginning with Beta Alpha. However, names with the same Greek letter repeated, such as Beta Beta, Gamma Gamma, etc., were still not used. Without using such repeated-letter names, there are a total of 576 possible one- and two-letter names, of which 429 have been issued to date.

Colony names take one of two forms. If a chapter was previously chartered at an institution, then a colony that is later recognized at that institution is given the name of the chapter that was originally there. Upon the colony's successful completion of the Colony Program, the original chapter is reactivated and the original charter document (if it still exists) is reissued along with a separate Certificate of Reactivation. If there has never been a chapter at an institution, then a colony there is issued a name consisting of the state where the institution is located followed by a single Greek letter to distinguish it from any other colonies in the state. Upon the colony's successful completion of the Colony Program, a new chapter is installed and a charter with the next chapter name in sequence is issued.

[edit] Naming Anomalies

The list of chapters in the next section includes notes relating to the many quirks that have occurred in the history of the naming of chapters. Two names, Gamma and Zeta, were reissued in the Fraternity's early days, while two other names, Mu Epsilon and Mu Kappa, have never been issued and likely never will considering how far out of sequence they would be. The National Directory section of the Fraternity's web site shows that the name Mu Kappa was assigned to Kentucky State University, but all other records indicate that a chapter was never chartered there and that the name Mu Kappa was not issued elsewhere. During the 1950s and 1960s, rapid expansion meant that chapters were being chartered on dates very close to one another. In fact, in 1960 as many as ten chapters were chartered in the span of a single week. This resulted in many chapter names being issued that did not necessarily correspond to the relative order in which the chapters were chartered. Finally, there are two sheltering institutions that have each housed two chapters with different names. In both of these cases, the reason is that the first chapter chartered at the institution was expelled and the later petitioning group requested that a new chapter be installed instead of the expelled chapter being reactivated.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has chartered 431 collegiate chapters (including the founding Alpha Chapter) in its history, of which 217 are currently active. 1. Gamma and Zeta are the only two chapter names to have been issued more than once. A provision in the Fraternity's National Constitution now states, "In no case shall a charter to a chapter at one institution be transferred to any group at any other institution not the legitimate successor of the institution to which the charter was originally granted; nor shall the chapter name be assigned elsewhere."[4]
2. Chapter name is out of sequence, which may be due to the name having been issued without the exact installation date of the chapter being known first, a change in chapter installation date(s) after the name was issued, or some other reason.
3. Chapter was expelled in the last year noted in the "Years Active" column.
4. Eta-Omicron Chapter was formed by the merger of schools and chapters: Cincinnati College of Music (Eta) and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (Omicron); hence the hyphenated name.
5. A group of students at Grambling State University successfully petitioned for the installation of a new chapter instead of the reactivation of the expelled Eta Delta Chapter which previously existed there, thus leading to the installation of Omicron Lambda Chapter.
6. A group of students at McNeese State University successfully petitioned for the installation of a new chapter instead of the reactivation of the expelled Zeta Chi Chapter which previously existed there, thus leading to the installation of Rho Zeta Chapter.
