Chapin is a town in Lexington County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 628 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

(34.165783, -81.347260)According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²) of it is land and 0.55% is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 628 people, 249 households, and 193 families residing in the town. The population density was 349.6 people per square mile (134.7/km²). There were 261 housing units at an average density of 145.3/sq mi (56.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.04% White, 6.37% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.48% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64% of the population.
There were 249 households out of which 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.6% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 33.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $48,750, and the median income for a family was $58,281. Males had a median income of $40,455 versus $28,125 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,124. About 2.6% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.9% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
