[edit] History

Formerly a village referred to as Alreton in the Domesday Book, Chapel Allerton was incorporated into Leeds administrative area in 1869 as a civil parish. Its housing ranges from gentrified nineteenth-century terraces in the south and west to suburban twentieth-century housing in the north and east. The area includes art deco housing. The area was once home to an art deco cinema, the Dominion. Opened in 1934 and lasting only until 1967, the cinema stood on Montreal Avenue. The residential street 'Dominion Avenue' is close to its former site[1]. The public house The Nag's Head opened in 1772 and according to local legend the original inkeepers were in league with 18th Century Highwaymen.[2] The area was once home to a gothic stone church, St Matthew's Church, built in 1900, yet by 1935 attendances had fallen and the church had become so unsafe it was demolished[3]. Until the Leeds Tram was removed, Chapel Allerton was linked to the City Centre by tram and the area also had its own tram shed.

There are also many takeaways, a library, petrol station and many other independent shops. The council have allowed many cafe's, bars and restraunts to utilise pavement space creating a pavement cafe culture in the area. Many of the shops are chains, such as Subway, Greggs (formerly Thurstons), Pizza Hut and Cafe Nero. .
