Chapayevsk (Russian: Чапа́евск) is a town in Samara Oblast, Russia, located 40 kilometers (25 mi) from the city of Samara, on the right bank of the Chapayevka River (a tributary of the Volga River). Population: 73,912 (2002 Census).[1]
A settlement was founded in the area in 1909 per Nicholas II's decree that a military plant be established there. In 1927, the settlement became the town of Chapayevsk after the celebrated Red Army commander Vasily Chapayev. The city served as a base for secret military production, hosting four such factories until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.[2]
