[edit] History
The Chanticleer Community Theater was formed in 1952 when a small group of volunteers began performances of one-act plays as well as other short features in the ballroom of the Chieftain Hotel in Council Bluffs, IA. Chanticleer began its first full length production at the Thomas Jefferson High School Theater, in 1953, with "The Man Who Came to Dinner."
In 1963 the theater was moved to its present home at the Joe Smith Memorial Theater, dedicated to one of Council Bluffs' most prominent merchants and humanitarians. Presented in the fall of 1963, Eugene O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey into Night" served as its premier production.
