Channagiri is located at 14.03° N 75.93° E.[1] It has an average elevation of 662 metres (2171 feet). Rani Chennammaji of Keladi, who constructed this town in rememeberence of victory.

Channagiri had a population of 18,517. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Channagiri has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 74% and female literacy of 67%. 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The city has multiethnic population. Most of them are Hindus and rest Mohammadans, Jains. Every year GADDIGESHWARA UTSAVA is held for three days. On this occasion, the Mutt will arrange PRASADAM thrice a day. Most beautiful scene to see will be PALLAKKI UTSAV and VEERAGAASE played there. The main temples in town are situated on hills. One is at Mudenahalli (Aanjaneya) and other at Kote (Ranganathaswamy). Gowramma Street is in the heart of city. This street is famous for Gowramma temple.
