Chandu the Magician was one of the longest running juvenile adventure serials on radio. Magician/Yogi secret agent Chandu once known as Frank Chandler, had learned eastern magics from the Yogis in India. Now with these supernatural abilities has has been entrusted to "go forth with his youth and strength to conquer the evil that threatens mankind." He has the power to teleport, astral project, mesmerize, as well as project illusions.
The 30 minute show ran from 1932 to 1933 with Gayne Whitman and sometimes Howard Hoffman in the title role, it was revived in 1948 as a 15 minute show with Tom Collins as Chandu. The show was heard as a local program sponsored by White King Soap on KHJ in Los Angeles and in February 1932, sponsored by Beech Nut on WOR in the East. Beginning October 08, 1932, it was aired nationally over the Mutual Network. The 154 fifteen minutes episodes ended on 01 January 1949. On 3 February, 1949 the broadcasts were expanded to 30 minutes and each script was a self contained story line instead of a serial. The episodes were heard over ABC 19 November, 1949 to 6 September 1950.
