[edit] Classes

CVU offers classes in all the basic subjects, including math, social studies, English, and many sciences. The science department offered classes in chemistry, biology, earth sciences, botany, microbiology, and biogenetics. For extra stimulation and work, CVU offers three levels of band, multiple chorus classes, woodworking and metalworking, CAD design, French, Spanish, Latin, and Greek.

Upon entering CVU for freshman year, students are divided up into four different houses/cores: Nichols, Snelling, Fairbanks and Chittenden. Each student remains a part of their assigned house until graduation. All freshmen must take mandatory classes in English, social studies, mathematics, science, physical education, and health.

The daily schedule at CVU is broken up into block scheduling. The calendar is divided into red and white days. Many students have 'free blocks' in which they are able to relax, go to the library, or go to a commons area to socialize with friends. A typical school day at CVU starts at 8:15 and ends at 3:00. Classes are an hour and a half long each.

[edit] Student body

The students of each class elect a class council from students in their year of graduation to represent their class to the faculty, as well as fund-raise, organize their class's prom and trike for the annual Winter Carnival Trike Race. All four class council bodies are under one leadership, the class council president. The president is a member of the senior class, and he or she serves for one year only. There is also a general Student Council that has elections every year. Candidates for president and vice-president need to make speeches in front of the entire student body before the elections. Along with the president and V.P, the council also holds spots for two class representatives from each grade, and two spots for each of the following committees (the spots are occupied by one junior and one senior): Graduation Challenge, Curriculum Clearinghouse, Advisory PLP, Climate, Pathways and Schoolboard. The Student Council traditionally meets once a week throughout the school year, as do class councils.

The students are also allowed to create clubs as they see fit, and the club can use the CVU facilities as long as a faculty member agrees to be the advisor. Because of this freedom, clubs at CVU range from serious (Scholar's Bowl) to fun (Leisure Sports and Barbecue) and everywhere in between.

[edit] Athletics

The school mascot is the Redhawk, having recently changed its name from Crusaders due to concerns regarding the historically insensitive and ethnically insulting nature of the old term. The school offers the following sports to students:

[edit] Fall Sports

  • The football program is a recent addition to CVU's fall athletics program. The decision was made to turn it into a varsity program in 2004 after being a club sport for several years.
  • CVU competes in Division 1 brackets for all sports, except football (Division 3). The men's soccer, women's soccer, and cross country teams have won multiple state championships. The Men's soccer team is CVU and one of Vermont's most decorated sports team. The team has won the past six state championships and has been recognized as one of the best team's in the New England area and has even been seen in some national rankings. The team/school has since been given the name, "soccer central."

[edit] Winter Sports

The Men's Ice Hockey team had it's best season since winning the state title several years back. Going into the playoffs as a #2 seed, the Redhawks were able to reach the state title game, in which they lost to rival, Essex. The Women's basketball team also had one of it's best seasons. Riding experience through the playoffs, the Redhawks reached the title game, in which they lost to defending state champion, Mt. Anthony.
