Champdieu is a town and commune in the Loire département of central France.

The town and name of Champdieu evolved in the course of ages. First of all CANDICUS (Roman leader), then in XIth century the village is called CANDIACO. It becomes in XIIIth century CHANDIACO then CHANDIEU and to finish in XVIth century it becomes FIELD-GOD and finally apres 1801 CHAMPDIEU. The origin of the village parried be previous to carolingian epoch. The current village of Champdieu was formed in Xth century (980) around the rich bénédictain establishment created on the fief of the old Castle of Candiae (Castrum Candiacus). The first Lords of Candiae or Chandieu were vassals of the counts of Forez.
