Chahar dara District is situated in the central part of Kunduz Province in Northern Afghanistan. It has borders with Qalay-I-Zal District to the west, Kunduz District to the north-east, Ali abad District to the west and Baghlan and Samangan provinces to the south. The population is 65,100 (2006): 55% Pashtun, 25% Tajik, 12% Uzbek, 8% Turkmen. The district center is the village of Chahar dara (also: Cardara; Ribat). It is located on 36.6933° N 68.8014° E at 376 m altitude in the Kunduz River Valley, a few miles east of Kunduz. The Kunduz River Valley is the dominant terrain feature in Chahar Darreh. The river forms a natural eastern boundary, although the administrative eastern border of Chahar Darreh is not 100% concurrent with the river. The river, along with a major tributary and derivative canals provide irrigation to the single crop cultivation fields that dominate land usage in Chahar Darreh. The district also has some dual crop fields, primarily in the northwest sector of the district.
