Chacarita is a barrio or district in the centre part of Buenos Aires city, Argentina. It is located between Avenida Elcano, railroad of Ferrocarril General Urquiza, Avenue Del Campo, Avenue Garmendia, Avenue Warnes, Avenue Dorrego, railroad of Ferrocarril General San Martín, Avenue Córdoba, Avenue Dorrego and Avenue Álvarez Thomas. This is a quiet neighbourhood with tree-lined streets, mainly old houses and contains the well-known Cemetery of Chacarita.
[edit] History
The territories of this district belonged formerly to the Jesuits, who had small farms. Its name comes from the word "small farm" or chácara in old Spanish. In 1767 they were expelled and all their goods were declared property of the Crown.
One of the houses left was the one of the Comastri family, which at the moment is the Escuela Nacional de Educación Técnica N° 34. This building was constructed in 1870, and it is famous because Roca and Pellegrini lived there before the Revolución de Mayo. The house was visited by General Mitre and doctor Alem and served as hiding place for Hipólito Yrigoyen during the civic movement of 1893.
[edit] Main streets
It is limited by Ferrocarril General Urquiza, Avenida Dorrego, Warnes, Garmendia, Avenida des Campo, Elcano and Alvarez Thomas. The Avenida Jorge Newbery is characterized for being the only way the funeral cars are allowed to go towards the cemetery, that has its main entrance in the street Guzmán 780.
Chacarita is denominated by the tango encuentro obligado and the Cemetery of Chacarita (100 km²). A large park called Los Andes can be found there which was inaugurated in 1941. The meeting place of the neighbourhood is the “Club Chacarita Juniors”.
Federico Lacroze Station commuter rail terminal which handles local and long-distance services is also located in Chacarita.
