"CGEM" is the FOX-affiliated television station for Quincy, Illinois. The call letters are fictional as its start was on Quincy's Insight cable system only. Now CGEM is a digital subchannel of the area's NBC affiliate WGEM-TV which is owned by Quincy Newspapers. Over-the-air, CGEM broadcasts a digital signal on UHF channel 10.3 from WGEM's transmitter (which is located east of Quincy).
For cable subscribers, the station is also offered on Insight channel 18 or 383 on digital cable. It is located in its parent station, WGEM studios which are located in the Hotel Quincy on Hampshire Street in Downtown Quincy.
The "CGEM" name is based on its original destination: "Cable". The channel was established in 1993 to fill a void in a market where there was no local FOX affiliate. It still remains the only Fox station in the market.
[edit] Local Programming
WGEM once produced a weeknight 9 PM newscast for CGEM called CGEM News at 9. It debuted in April of 2006 but was cancelled in March of 2007. Re-runs of Scrubs now airs in the 9 PM slot. It was anchored by Jake Miller who continues to anchor on WGEM weeknights at 5 and 10 PM. Chief Meteorologist Rich Cain provided the weather forecasts.
At another point in time, CGEM simulcasted the WGEM Radio (AM 1140 and 105.1 FM) weekday morning show called WGEM Sunrise: Radio Edition from 7 to 9 AM. This was dropped from CGEM's schedule as well.
Today, CGEM airs two weekly public affair shows: City Desk and WGEM News This Week. They are produced by WGEM and air on that station as well. CGEM is a full Fox network affiliate broadcasing the entire Fox line-up including NFL football.
