The Observer is a mysterious astronomical object that first appeared around Nov. 3rd, 2012.

The Observer does not rise or set. It suddenly appears in a star-less area (much like turning on a lightbulb).

For disappearing, however, it fades into different man-made icons, usually three or four, one after the other. It makes a warbling sound while it does so. This lasts, on average, 0.7 seconds.

It is also impossible to photograph. Any attempt to do so results in a pure-red image. Even if just one pixel in the camera sees it.

Because of it appearing in a star-less area, when stars should normally be there, scientists speculate that it is a starship built by an alien civilization. This is often stomped by the fact that it changes into human icons when disappearing.

Another theory is that it symbolizes the apocalypse. As December 23rd, 2012 marks the end of the Mayan calendar. Supposedly when life completely resets.
