CFMZ-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts classical music at 96.3 FM in Toronto and 103.1 FM in Cobourg, Ontario. Although legally the station is licensed to Cobourg and the Toronto transmitter is a rebroadcaster, the station's actual operations are in Toronto.
The station is branded as Classical 96 and Classical 103.
The station was launched in 1979 as CFMX-FM by D. B. Williamson, the owner of Cobourg's CHUC. The station was plagued with financial and technical problems in its early years, and in 1981 its license was briefly suspended by the CRTC.
Williamson's company went into receivership in 1983, and the station was acquired by businessman Martin Rosenthal.
The Toronto transmitter was added in 1988.
In September 2006, Canadian broadcaster Moses Znaimer purchased the station, changing the call sign to reflect his initials. However, according to Industry Canada databases, the Toronto rebroadcaster kept its original CFMX-FM-1 call sign. [1]
In September of 2007, Znaimer also announced a deal to acquire CHWO, a pop standards station in Oakville, pending CRTC approval.
In 2008, the CRTC also approved a license change which will see the transmitter in Cobourg licensed as a separate station. All of the Cobourg station's music programming will continue to be provided by the Toronto station, although the new Cobourg station will originate 24 hours per week of locally-oriented talk and spoken word programming.[2]
Along with CJPX-FM in Montreal and CJSQ-FM in Quebec City, CFMZ is one of the only commercial broadcasters in Canada playing a purely classical music format, and the only one of those which broadcasts in English. In most of Canada, classical music listeners are served by the public CBC Radio Two or Espace musique networks, neither of which play classical music around the clock. While CHLX-FM in Gatineau and CKOT-FM in Tillsonburg plays classical music as well, they are not around-the-clock either.
