CFMK-FM

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CFMK is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting at 96.3 FM in Kingston, Ontario. The station aired a country format for decades before changing to an adult hits format branded as Joe FM in 2004. The station changed format to classic hits, rebranding as "FM96 - the greatest rock and roll of all time" in June 2007.

The station was launched in 1947 as CKWR-FM, an FM simulcast of CKWS. Both stations were owned by Allied Broadcasting, in which the Kingston Whig-Standard was the primary partner. The station's call sign was changed to CKWS-FM in the same year, and Allied changed its name to Frontenac Broadcasting in 1954. The station adopted its current CFMK call sign in 1976.

In 1977, Paul Desmarais and Claude Pratte purchased Frontenac Broadcasting. In 1987, ownership was transferred directly to Desmarais' Power Corporation, and in 1989, Frontenac and another Power subsidiary, Kawartha Broadcasting, were merged to form Power Broadcasting.

In 1998, both the AM and FM stations were knocked off the air for a week by the Ice Storm of 1998.

The stations were purchased by Corus Entertainment in 2000. CFMK adopted the Joe FM branding and format in 2004.

The first Morning Show on Joe FM was hosted by Laura Hampshire and Brian West. After about 5 months Laura moved to Middays (10a-2p) and Shannon & Brian became the new show. Shannon left the station a year later and Brian West took over as Music Director and became the new Midday Host. Buzz & Ali are the current morning show. Rebecca Wolfe hosts Middays, Jay on Joe (Jason Scotland) is on-air during afternoons and Tricia Knowles hosts evenings. Angela Stever provides afternoon newscasts.

The station has flipped formats to Kingston's FM 96 - The Greatest Rock & Roll Of All Time.

FM96 features the Legends of Classic Rock. Since 2001, Jeff Woods has given Classic Rock fans the stories behind the music that defined a generation.
