[edit] Template documentation

The Category Format (CF) templates are a suite of templates to be used in conjunction with automatic category listing. An automatically listed category is a category which has an associated category list page where the items in the category are listed.

Each page (an article or other namespace item) in the category has a corresponding entry on the category list page, which gives the name of the page, its namespace number, and a timestamp indicating when it was added to the category. The pages are typically listed in chronological order, and the page is updated regularly by a bot.

For maximum flexibility, the entries on the category list page are formatted using a subtemplate of CF named after the category. For instance each page in an automatically listed has a corresponding entry

{{CF/Foo|Pagename|Namespace|Timestamp|extra={} }}

on the category list page. Although the category list page can be formatted in situ (on the page itself) by the CF template, the intention is that the category list page will be transcluded onto other pages. The extra parameter is provided to control the format of the list at each point where the category list is transcluded (although if the list is only transcluded once onto a page, it suffices to use the PAGENAME magic word instead).

Automatic category listing is currently carried out by VeblenBot, a bot account operated by Carl(CBM). Each supported by VeblenBot has a category list page User:VeblenBot/C/Foo, which contains a list of templates for each item in the category in chronological order, separated by newlines.
