Cesare Ripa

Cesare Ripa (died 1622) was an Italian aesthetician and author of the Iconologia (or in full: Iconologia overo Descrittione Dell’imagini Universali cavate dall’Antichità et da altri luoghi) (1593), a highly influential emblem book used by artists to give substance to qualities such as virtue, courage, wisdom and others.

The book was extremely influential in the 17th and 18th centuries, and was quoted extensively in various art forms. The baroque painter Antonio Cavallucci, drew the inspiration for his painting Origin of Music. This book was also highly influential for the painter Pietro da Cortona and his followers.

Ripa died in Rome in 1622.
