CESNET is Czech Republic's National Research and Education Network (NREN) operator. It has been founded in 1996 by universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic - ( Current members). Association is a successor of activity CESNET provided by Czech Technical University (ČVUT), started as FESNET in 1992.

CESNET has several research activities. From hybrid networking, programmable hardware, metacomputing to middleware and video transmissions CESNET is doing wide spectrum in research in networking. For complete list of activities visit CESNET web.

From 1992 to 1999 there was commercial network CESNET, but this activity has been sold in beginning of 1999 and from that time is CESNET fully focused to academic networking.

CESNET's main goals are:

  • operation and development of the Czech NREN
  • research and development of advanced network technologies and applications
  • broadening of the public knowledge about the advanced networking topics

CESNET is a long-time Czech academic network operator and participant of corresponding international projects. The most important international relationships of the CESNET association are:

  • shareholder of the DANTE
  • member of TERENA
  • Internet2 international partner
  • participant of the european GN2/GÉANT2 project (and former GÉANT, QUANTUM/TEN-155, TEN-34 projects)
  • GLIF participant

Fiber optic backbone ring based on DWDM technology connects Prague, Brno, Olomouc and Hradec Kralove with bandwidth up to 32 x 10 Gbit/s.
