Cervara di Roma is a comune (municipality) in the province of Rome in the Italian region Latium, located about 50 km east of Rome. Cervara di Roma borders the following municipalities: Agosta, Arsoli, Camerata Nuova, Marano Equo, Rocca di Botte, Subiaco.
Founded by Benedictine monks in the 8th or 9th century, the small but picturesque hill town faces the Simbruini Mountains. The historic center of Cervara can only be reached by foot after a 115 ft climb.
Cervara has experienced a steady loss of population since World War II as residents left farming for jobs in nearby Rome. With approximately 75 percent of Cervara's inhabitants over the age of 60, the town's population dipped to 465 in 2004. [1]
Cervara's economic prospects have brightened in recent years. The hilltop centro storico has become a haven for writers and artists. In the summer of 2007, the University of Arkansas will open a study center in the hill town for architecture and liberal arts students, the center will be associated with the university's Rome Center for Architecture and the Humanities.
