CERE India

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE) is a Mumbai-based non-profit organisation established by Dr. Rashneh N. Pardiwala and Ms. Kitayun Rustom, to bring together research, teaching and social work fraternities so as to widen the scope and effectiveness of the environmental research and education across India.

The environment and its natural resources need immediate attention and can only be saved by sound field research projects to better understand the effect of anthropogenic stress factors on natural equilibriums and CERE undertakes pioneering projects to study and promote urban and rural sustainability in India.

CERE believes that wide-spread education can permanently change lifestyles from being environmentally-unsustainable to being environmentally-sustainable, affordable and less damaging. Good environmental education is learner-centered, providing students with opportunities to construct their own understandings through hands-on, minds-on investigations, where learners are engaged in direct experiences and are challenged to use higher-order thinking skills. Environmental education must cultivate the ability to recognize uncertainty, envision alternative scenarios, and adapt to changing conditions and information. Knowledge, skills, and habits of mind translate into a civil society that is better able to address its common problems and create lifestyles that are more in tune with the earth.

CERE has successfully completed a number of national and state-level projects and also publishes school educational material including text books, activity sheets and audio-visual aides. Many schools across India are presently prescribing to CERE books and resource material.

In 2005, both Dr. Pardiwala and Ms. Rustom were recognized as social entrepreneurs for change and were awarded the ASHOKA Fellowship.
