Central Zoo Authority of India

Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA), Government of India is the central body which has been relatively recently set up to oversee the various aspects of the Zoos in India. It was formed to update the Indian Zoos to international standards. Prior to the formation of CZA many of the Zoos in India were poorly managed with unplanned, unhealthy animal enclosures and kept no breeding records of their zoo animals. Inbreeding was rampantant among the stock of animals and some key species had been randomly hybredized with other subspecies, like the famous case of crossbreeding of Indian or Asiatic Lion with the circus confiscated African Lions leading to Genetic Pollution.
With the formation of CZA the condition of Indian Zoos are improving steadily and Stud Books have been set up for the planned breeding of endangered species.
