[edit] History
Central Sussex College was formed in August 2005 from a merger of Crawley College and Haywards Heath College. [1]
Crawley College was opened in 1958 [2] by West Sussex County Council at the campus in Crawley town centre. The college offered many technical courses, particularly in engineering fields, and was later known as Crawley College of Technology for some years.
Haywards Heath College was established in 1980 and offered mainly courses for 16 - 18 year old students following on from compulsory education. [3]
[edit] Campuses
The college has 6 campuses across the county, offering a variety of services at each.
The Crawley campus at College Road, Crawley, offers a variety of technical and professional courses, including engineering, hair and beauty services, food, information technology and construction. It is the largest of the campuses. [4]
The Haywards Heath campus at Harlands Road, Haywards Heath offers mainly post-compulsory courses such as Advanced level courses and National Vocational Qualifications. The campus attracts mainly students in the 16-18 age bracket. [5]
The Horsham campus is based at Arun House, Hurst Road, Horsham, and offers courses in Business, Marketing, Hair and beauty services [6] as well as being the centre through which undergraduate courses are undertaken in partnership with the University of Chichester. [7]
There are two campuses in East Grinstead at Queensmere House in the town centre offering many IT-based courses, as well as a beauty salon, and at The Birches Industrial Estate where there is a vocational centre working in partnership with the local secondary schools. [8]
The final campus at the Victoria Business Centre in Burgess Hill provides vocational training for adults. [9]
[edit] Enterprise
The college has trainee hairdressing, beauty saloons, and a restaurant open to the public. These allow students to train with real customers.
Intuition is the brand name for the college's trainee hairdressing and beauty salons at Crawley, East Grinstead and Horsham. [10]
Le Cordon Vert is a restaurant based at the Crawley campus. [11]
[edit] Press Attention
In December 2006, on the Haywards Heath campus of Central Sussex College, several students participated in a Jackass themed video. The video was filmed in the student common room during free periods and was then uploaded to YouTube, but was removed by the owner in February 2007 after the college found the video and got in contact with the police. In response to the video, the college has installed two Closed Circuit TV cameras during the student half term in order to monitor common room activities.
[edit] Notable Alumni
