The Harbour Line is a branch of the Central Railway in Mumbai. The line is one of the three divisions of the Mumbai suburban railway. It covers most of the eastern flank of the city. The starting point is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station in South Mumbai. The line then splits from the main line at Sandhurst Road where the line becomes elevated up till Sewri. At Wadala, the line branches into two parts. The first line joins with the Western Railway at Mahim and terminates at Andheri. The second line follows through Mankhurd into the city of Navi Mumbai, where it again branches out into two lines, one going to Thane and the other to Panvel. The first stop outside Mumbai is the township of Vashi.
In 2004, a new line was opened to the public connecting Vashi to Thane without entering the city. This proved to be a boon for most commuters headed in either direction as travelling via Kurla was time consuming and required changing a train midway. Another line is in construction linking Uran to Nerul/Belapur.
The line is a double line and therefore does not have any fast trains on it. A few sections on the line are known for slums, stench and filth along the tracks. The newly designed train stations in Navi Mumbai are a contrast with the old, congested and overcrowded stations within the Mumbai city limits
