[edit] History
The Central Polytechnic College, Chennai is one of the oldest Technical Institutions in Tamil Nadu and its history dates back to the year 1916 when it was started under the name of the Madras Trade School for giving part-time training to apprentices in Mechanical Engineering and Plumbing trades, with an intake of 20 trainees in each course.[citation needed]
In the year 1946, the name of the institution was changed to THE CENTRAL POLYTECHNIC MADRAS and the institution was then conducting seven full-time diploma courses of three years duration.
In the beginning, the Madras Trade School was located in a rented building. Owing to the rapid expansion during the Second Five-Year Plan, and with further development of the Institution and expansion of its activities during the Third Five-Year Plan, the need for more spacious building and playgrounds etc., was felt, lands to the extent of 40 hectares were initially acquired in the present premises at Adyar; for construction of new buildings.[citation needed]
This further led to the acquisition of another 3221 hectares to accommodate other special Institutions. This vast campus of the Central Institutes of Technology was developed with laboratories , workshops and hostels during the year 1960-64.[citation needed]
The institution has a built up area of 30,014 Sq.m. The Laboratories are well equipped with equipments worth 40 million rupees.[citation needed]
