The Central Government War Headquarters (CGWHQ), at Corsham, Wiltshire, was the site of the United Kingdom's highest level administration in the event of a catastrophic emergency. Since 1991 this has been run down, and is now on a care and maintenance basis. It is not known whether newer facilities exist.
At a lower level, Regional Emergency Committees, and (in the event of nuclear war) Regional Commissioners, provided the apparatus of constitutional government.
In the 1960s war plans apparently envisaged evacuating the Sovereign to the Royal Yacht Britannia. It would appear that, contrary to persistent rumour, there were no plans for the Sovereign to join the Prime Minister at the Corsham bunker complex known variously as Hawthorn, Subterfuge, Site 3, Burlington or Turnstile.[citation needed]
