Central Colleges of the Philippines (CCP) is located in Quezon City, Metro Manila. The faculty is devoted to teaching and strives to challenge students to make the most of their talents. Besides offering freshman, transfer students, international students, and graduate students a diverse learning experience, it also provides opportunities for students to be involved in internships, research, and community outreach programs.[1]

The Central Colleges of the Philippines was founded on January 18, 1954 with an enrollment of 300 students.[2] The institution originally consisted of only one building. In the school’s academic years 1960-1961 the College of Arts and Sciences and Business Administration opened.[2]Central Colleges of the Philippines was established by a group of educators. The college was formerly known as Polytechnic Colleges until 1969, when the chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Hermenegildo R. Reyes decided to change the name to the Central Colleges of the Philippines.[2]During Dr. Reyes tenure courses like Secretarial Administration and Agricultural-Business Management were added. (1977) A degree in Doctor of Optometry was also established during his tenure in 1981. Dr. Rey was dean of the school for thirteen years until his death in 1982. His position would later be taken over by his son Crispino P. Reyes.[2]

[edit] Scholarships

CCP offers a variety of scholarships. The main scholarship program is the H.R.Reyes Scholarship. The late Dr. Reyes was the former chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years. A scholarship program was established in his name to honor the former chairman. CCP provides scholarship grants to deserving students who qualify for the program. This scholarship program annually distributes 10 million pesos to qualifying students. The students who have a 85% or higher in the completion of a competitive exam will have met the criteria for the 10 top scholarships. The students who achieve 80% or above on the exam will meet the criteria for the remaining 190 spots.[5]

[edit] Pre-Qualifications for Scholarship Eligibility

You must be a high school graduate with at least an 82% in the following subjects: English, Mathematics, and Science.[6]Meeting this requirement will make you eligible to take a competitive exam, which will determine scholarship eligibility.[6]

Majors in the Central Colleges of the Philippines include Accountancy, Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Computer Studies, Education, Engineering, Nursing, Office Administration, and Optometry.[7]The faculty tries to keep a close relationship with their students to help them reach their maximum potential. The students are treated with care and respect.[7]

[edit] Undergraduate Studies

Architecture

Architecture was first offered as a major in 1953 as a part of the College of Engineering. In 1975 it was separated from College of Engineering into its own program. The program is open to a maximum of 500 students. It is housed in a new building that was completed in 1995. 16 faculty members teach in this program. The degree earned is a Bachelor of Science in Architecture.[8]

Accountancy

The College of Accountancy was established to encompass five goals. These goals include preparing a student to be “technically competent, morally upright, ethically responsible, socially- oriented, and globally competitive.” The degree earned is a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.[9]

Business Administration

The College of Business Administration prepares students to meet the challenges of working in the many facets of business and economy. The degrees earned are Bachelor degrees in Computer Management, Banking and Finance, Marketing, Economics, and Management.[10]

Computer Studies

The College of Computer Science devotes to the primary objective of preparing the students for employment in a computer intensive field or graduate study. Three different Bachelor degrees and one Associate degree are offered on the College of Computer Studies including Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Management and Associate in Computer Technology.[11]

Education

The College of Education offers majors in English, Filipino (Tagolog), History, and Mathematics by equipping the future teacher with skills and knowledge in the recognition of individual learning needs.[12]

Engineering

The College of Engineering goals for their students include developing both knowledge and technical skills, which will provide and in-depth understanding of the subject matter. Five different Bachelor degrees are offered in the School of Engineering including Civil, Computer Electronics and Communications, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical.[13]

Nursing

Since CCP’s opening 50 years ago, it has added a nursing program. Students can receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. CCP has a five story nursing building that includes air- conditioning, nursing skills laboratory, mini hospital, and public health settings. There are classrooms and laboratories to facilitate the academic and hands on skills needed to learn anatomy-physiology, microbiology- parasitological, chemistry and physics laboratories, and other classrooms.[14]

Office Administration

The College of Office Administration has two levels of study. The two-year course provides the student with general knowledge of business principles and computer fundamental techniques to gain an entry-level position in office management. The degree obtained is Associate in Office Administration. The four-year course provides the student with business principles geared toward an office management position. The degree earned is a Bachelor of Science in Office Administration.[15]

[edit] Graduate Studies

The Graduate school of CCP was established in 1979. The graduate school focuses on students of Business Administration, Public Management, and Teaching. The three graduate programs are MBA, MPA, and MAT. CCP wants the graduate students to be “effective managers, entrepreneurs, and productive members of the business community.” The graduate classrooms are air-conditioned. Graduate students have access to their own library with Internet access.

Doctorate of Optometry:

CCP offers one doctorate program, which is in Optometry. The student will be able to practice medical optometry. The students also have the opportunity of conducting supervised research.[16]

CCP athletics consists of three values tolerance, team spirit, and fairness.[17]Athletics include Badminton, Basketball, Cheerleading, Chess, Karate, Table Tennis, and Volleyball.[17]

The men’s volleyball team won the 2005-2006 CUSA Volleyball Championship. They defeated St. Jude College 3-1 in a best of 3 finals. CCP has won 6 championships (1997-1998, 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2002-2003, and 2005-2006)[18]

CCP Karate Club works under the Shotokan Karate International Federation (SKIF). The Karate team has been associated with SKIF since 1994. In 1992 the Karate Club won their first IWABUCHI CUP. From 1993-1994 the Karate Club won consecutive championships of the Private Schools Athletic Association.[19]

There are three libraries in CCP, which are specific for Nursing, Engineering, and Graduate students.[20] A library card is required to enter into the library. Undergraduates can check out two books, while graduate students may check out five. There is also access to photocopying machines and printers in the library.[20]
