[edit] First name disambiguation pages

I am coming to you because you voted on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Alessandra. Following the listing of Alessandra for deletion, some users are now going through first name disambiguation pages throughout Wikipedia, seeking to either delete them or to remove names. These users cite the following text in the Wikipedia:Disambiguation policy:

  • In most cases, do not list names of which Title is a part, unless the persons are very frequently referred to simply by their first or last name (e.g. Shakespeare, Galileo).

I believe that part of the policy should be changed. The reasons include those I've already stated in my comments on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Alessandra. To elaborate further, I believe this policy is inherently contradictory to the policy on Wikipedia:Redirect, which states that redirects should not be deleted if:

  • They aid searches on certain terms.
  • Someone finds them useful. Hint: If someone says they find a redirect useful, they probably do. You might not find it useful — this is not because the other person is a liar, but because you browse Wikipedia in different ways.

To see how this situation is similar to that for first-name disambiguation pages, we can consider the page Noam, which serves as a perfect example. Examining the page history of Noam, we see that the article started out as a redirect to Noam Chomsky (who is not commonly known by his first name). This page was then changed to a redirect to Noam Federman, at which point an edit war began between two users with the users changing the redirect back and forth between Noam Chomsky and Noam Federman. The obvious solution to this edit war, which I implemented, was to turn the redirect page into a disambiguation page for people named Noam.

By the logic of the policy quoted above on Wikipedia:Redirect, the redirect should not be deleted. But that leads to disputes over the most famous usage of a particular name. Disambiguations prevent exactly this problem, yet by the logic of the policy quoted above from Wikipedia:Disambiguation, the disambiguation page that solves this problem should be deleted!

This is why the policy stated above on Wikipedia:Disambiguation is poorly-thought out and unacceptable. Would you be willing to join me in pointing out these concerns on the talk page for Wikipedia:Disambiguation and working to change the policy so that first name disambiguation pages are acceptable? Please let me know. Thanks.

[edit] 1000000000000000

Care to take a look at this. I think it's wrong to Redirect 1015 to Trillion. Using Orders of magnitude (numbers) as a reference, Trillion is either 1012 (short scale) or 1018 (long scale) if I'm counting the zeros correctly. Also, I obviously don't know how to get under the ASUE box with this edit! hydnjo talk 1 July 2005 18:48 (UTC)

Definately. the best thing to do is comma it and count the sets of three. 1,000,000,000,000,000 that's 100 million million which is either 100 billion (UK) or a quadrillion I should imagine in the US (checking out quadrillion I see that I'm right. Should I make a new article for it along the lines of 1000000000000? Or redirect to quadrillion? What do you reckon? And by the way, sorry about the ASUE box. --Celestianpower 1 July 2005 22:03 (UTC)
Okay then, I've Been Bold and done it. 1000000000000000. --Celestianpower 2 July 2005 07:27 (UTC)

[edit] Links need disambiguation

As much as your intent to add wiki links to the gym leaders' names in the Pokémon Regions article was good, you really should not add wiki links if you do not check they are linking the correct article first. Please take care in doing this in the future by using the Show preview button and checking each link, before you click on Save page. --Daniel Lawrence 4 July 2005 20:50 (UTC)

Sorry. Yes - I will o in future. Thank you for doing it and cleaning up my mess! --Celestianpower 5 July 2005 14:38 (UTC)

[edit] h2g2 Template

In response to your question: I have added some links to the best h2g2 entries, such as at the bottom of Ohio, as well as at the bottom of the Wikipedia entry on Ohio. --Baryonic Being 18:23, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

This is a sock puppet of Cantus (who presently is blocked). —Lifeisunfair 08:45, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

Oh right. Sorry. --Celestianpower talk 09:12, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 3.1416

This (and many of partial representations of Pi) were deleted after discussion; please don't recreate them. Thanks. Noel (talk) 21:16, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

It was on WP:RfD; I don't have a specific link for you, look through the history. Space is not the issue; if it was only space, most entries on VfD wouldn't be there either. Noel (talk) 15:04, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] fwss

I'm very sorry if this is obvious but what does fwss mean? You used it in an edit summary. --Celestianpower talk 14:26, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Finish what someone started. I've found myself using it quite a bit when editing date pages and the like.... -- Smjg 14:48, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Pokémon on TV

Pokémon is not on terrestrial television in the UK at the moment.

On Sky, Kanto and the Orange Islands are shown on Toonami all over the schedule. Sky 1 show Master Quest at 7.00am, (and Sky Mix sometimes show Johto League Champions around 4.00am.)

New episodes are:

  • Advance Challenge on Sky 1 at 8.00am on Sundays.
  • Pokémon Chronicles on Toonami at 4.30pm on Wednesdays.

[edit] Re: Aboa Vetus

Hi, I just created the redirect so that I'd have an easier way to get into creating the article Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova. Now, I know it probably wasn't done exactly by policy (if there indeed is one on this kind of things), but still... The redirect didn't have a target for a whole nine minutes... :) - ulayiti (talk) 22:30, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

I apoligise for my skepticism. --Celestianpower talk 16:45, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Barnstar

I just wanted to thank you for awarding me with the Tireless Contributor Barnstar. It really meant a lot to me, and it was an excellent start to the month! Thanks again! Sinistro 13:17, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

That's quite all right. You deserve it!!! --Celestianpower talk 16:45, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hi Celestianpower

Hi Celestianpower, this is WiKIpeDiARocKs2001 thank you for making me feel comfortable about that I am not put under pressure and all that junk, I have already been doing some working on votes for deletion stuff, by voting to keep the article Online Soccer Project Alpha. If you have anything else please comment me on my discussion page. --WIKIPEDIArocks2001 18:12, 1 Aug 2005 (UCT)

Well I hope you continue to edit and contribute to Wikipedia, WikipediaRocks2001. Good luck. --Celestianpower talk 17:15, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hello from R.H. & a question

Hi, it's me. Do I have to log in seperately for the other Wikimedia wikis, like Wikiquote or Wikipedia in other languages? --R.H. 19:37, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

Yes, sorry. You need seperate accounts and everything. Hope that helps. --Celestianpower talk 20:00, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for the welcoming message, been editing pages for a while but only just decided to join - already made changes to Big Brother UK Series 6 and A Series Of Unfortunate Events (Authorized Biography) which coincidently are both favorites of yours. Thanks again! Squidward2602 15:35, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] BB UK 6: Derek Laud

Thanks for your comments on my Talk page. The reason I changed Derek Laud's link was to try keep it in line with the other housemate links that go to the list of housemates on Big Brother UK series 6, and I noted there was already a link to Laud's main article there amongst the list of housemates. If you feel it should link directly to the main article, I'm happy for it to be changed, but I was trying to gain some consistency seeing there was a link provided to the main article anyway. --TonyW 22:00, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

I just thought that it meant more clicks for the user and that's a bad thing but it doesn't really matter. --Celestianpower talk 07:33, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] reply from Iron Ghost

Dear Celestianpower, Thanks very much for the welcome. I'm actually not quite a newcomer but I've been away for about two years, I used to use the name of Dr Blix and did some stuff on Chinese mythology when it was still very rudimentary. Thanks for the welcome in any case, its nice to see a bit of community spirit!

All the Best,

Dan

Go to unfortunateevents.com and look on the message board. There a discussion regarding those titles.

[edit] Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome message. I've been reading Wikipedia for a long time and figured it was about time I started contributing as well. It was nice to get a welcome message though. :)

[edit] Reply

Hello, and thanks for the welcome. I've read through all the policy pages before I made my first edit so to make sure everything follows specs :-) I've previously edited some small things anonymously, and have been working some on another wiki-page in swedish (susning.nu), but since that one has closed the edit-option due to heavy vandalism I've started to contribute to the Swedish wikipedia, and thought I would help out some on the main wikipedia too.

I hope I can be helpfull to the project. Spreetin 09:54, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
