Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Edition

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Edition is, as denoted, a special edition of Pinoy Big Brother for celebrities and prominent personalities in the Philippines. As advertised, these celebrities may include commercial models, actors and actresses (even starlets), radio and TV show hosts, musicians, sports and fashion personalities, and even politicians.

Celebrity housemates, like many counterparts abroad, play for charity, aside from themselves. Prizes given away from edition to edition can vary, but basically, the cash prize an edition's winner can receive is the same as the prize for that winner's chosen charity organization, i.e. the winner and his/her charity wins the same amount.

The House used in the Celebrity Edition is typically the same one as used in the regular seasons, but with some modifications done. These changes are noticeable as soon as at least one housemate enters the House.

Generally, the theme song for this edition is the song Sikat ang Pinoy ("The Filipino is Famous") by Sam Milby and host Toni Gonzaga, pertaining to the personalities in this edition and the various quests of ordinary Filipinos for fame in any field.

[edit] First edition

The first edition was held from February 5 to April 1, 2006, running for 56 days. Fourteen celebrities competed in this edition. These include a leg amputee triathlete, a frontman of a reggae band, a radio DJ, four actors, a gold-medalist karateka, and at least three commercial models to name a few.

It was supposed to begin on the night of February 4, but it was cancelled because of the ULTRA stampede that occurred that day. Willie Revillame, the host of the show Wowowee as well as a host of the first regular season, was so distraught in the incident that he never reprised his role in this edition as well as all succeeding Pinoy Big Brother editions from that point onwards.

The edition was won by starlet Keanna Reeves, who played for women's rights group Gabriela. It was also notable for airing drama actor Rustom Padilla's confession of his homosexuality to Reeves which was highly praised both by viewers and by members of his family, including his action star brother Robin. Since the revelation, Rustom has been openly gay.

[edit] Second edition

The second Celebrity Edition started on the night of October 14, 2007, which is its "red carpet premiere." The show is slated to run for twelve weeks or 84 days, four weeks longer than the first. The edition's duration was supposedly only 70 days or ten weeks, but a seemingly fake news report announced the extension and it was later implied to be confirmed by Big Brother when he announced the date of the finale to be January 5 of the next year.

The house was elegantly refurbished with new furnitures and murals. Also the rooms for the men and women were switched and the confession room now has a throne-like chair and has lots of mirrors.

Among the housemates who entered the house are a comedian, two actresses, a former teen idol and his Olympian taekwondojin brother, and two 26K models from Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal, one present and one former, to name a few.

The second edition was won by comedian Ruben Gonzaga, who took part in behalf of Cosugian, a Home for The Aged in Davao City. He was also the first male winner in the history of the entire Pinoy Big Brother franchise.
