Celsius is the brand name of a calorie-burning beverage created by Celsius Holdings, Incorporated. The company claims that Celsius is "the first functional beverage product to launch with clinical proof of functionality." Currently, three placebo-controlled, clinical studies have been conducted confirming the claim that Celsius burns 100 calories per 12-ounce serving. There are five flavors available: Lemon-Lime, Cola, Ginger-Ale, Orange, and Wild Berry.
In 2005 Celsius won the Trade Award for "Best New Beverage," in 2006 it won the Retailer Award for "Best New Product - Soft Drinks," and in 2007, Datamonitor Industry Analyst "Predicts Celsius and calorie-burning beverages as #1 Food and Beverage Trend."
[edit] Product Information: Thermogenesis and Contents
Celsius was marketed as the first calorie-burning beverage "with the taste of a soft drink" and provided clinical proof of the effectiveness of their thermogenic blend. On June 18, 2005, a conference of the International Society of Sports Nutrition showed the results from clinical trials of the drink, stated that a 12%-increase in metabolism was observed over a 3-hour period from consuming just one bottle of Celsius. Therefore, Celsius is considered a thermogenic agent, because it stimulates the resting metabolic rate through thermogenesis (literally, the creation of heat).
A 12-ounce bottle of Celsius contains the same amount of caffeine as a 12-ounce cup of coffee, according to the American Beverage Association Web site. The company recommends that no more than three bottles of Celsius be consumed per day. The bottle states, however, "Celsius gets its fire from our proprietary Thermogenic Blend of nutrients, caffeine and botanicals that work naturally with your body to accelerate your metabolism." Below is a table of the contents found in one bottle (serving size = 12 fl. oz., or 1 bottle) of Celsius (note that the flavor is lemon-lime):
