Celebrity Big Brother 2006 was the fourth series of Celebrity Big Brother UK. The series started on 5 January 2006 and finished on 27 January 2006, running for three weeks. The series aired on Channel 4. This is the first series of Big Brother UK to be produced by Brighter Pictures, a subsidiary of Endemol UK, instead of by the parent company.
Artist Billy Childish turned down the offer to appear on the show. The first housemate to enter the house (and the eventual winner) was Chantelle, a girl from Essex and the first non-celebrity in a celebrity series. Her first task was to convince her celebrity housemates that she was actually a genuine celebrity herself – failure would have meant that she would have been evicted on Day 4. She was told to play the character of a pop star from the fictitious girl band "Kandy Floss", and that her biggest 'hit' was "I Want It Right Now". She succeeded in convincing the other housemates, and was allowed to stay.
This particular series was noted sometimes for its comedy, but more often for the extreme conflict that frequently broke out between the housemates, possibly because of the way in which Big Brother frequently reduced or confiscated the coffee and cigarettes that were used by the majority of the housemates. Other times it was more personal things, such as Jodie Marsh's vegetarianism and conservation beliefs versus Pete Burns' wearing of fur. Big Brother occasionally played on the conflict, or widening the already-present rift between them by encouraging each side to deceive one another in various events.
By the time of the series Finale, six housemates remained in the House. This was a first in Big Brother UK history and the next (non-celebrity) series, series 7, also adopted this format.

[edit] Notes
Note 1: Rula Lenska, as wearer of the Pants of Power after winning the 'box task', had to choose one housemate to automatically face the public vote. She chose Pete Burns.
Note 2: George Galloway and Preston, after breaking the "no discussing nominations" rule were called to the Diary Room to nominate three of their fellow housemates together. They were unaware at the time that what they were saying was being fed live into the house on the Plasma screen. They chose Maggot, Rula and Traci Bingham.
Note 3: Before nominations took place, Big Brother held a ballot to decided whether George should be permitted to nominate, as he once again had discussed nominations with a fellow housemate, breaking a fundamental Big Brother rule for the third time. Whilst nominations took place, George Galloway was not called to the diary room, showing he lost the vote. The eviction on Day 21 was a double eviction.
[edit] Ranking of fame
On Day 4, the housemates were asked to arrange themselves in order of fame from most famous to least. Chantelle had to avoid being the least famous in the lineup in order to remain. She succeeded as both Preston and Maggot ranked themselves as less famous.
There was some debate among the housemates as to whether Michael Barrymore or Dennis Rodman was the most famous, given that Barrymore is very famous in the UK while Rodman has a higher profile in the US and probably globally. George Galloway argued that Michael should be ranked first, it being a British show. He also later suggested, in a conversation with Rula, that globally he may have the most fame, claiming that most of the 1.3 billion Muslims in the world know of him. The housemates ranked themselves as follows:
- Michael
- Dennis
- Pete
- George
- Traci
- Rula
- Jodie
- Faria
- Chantelle
- Preston
- Maggot
[edit] Controversy
Pete Burns sparked controversy whilst in the house when he claimed that his coat was made of gorilla skin. This animal is an endangered species. The police took the coat from the house for testing following complaints from viewers. The tests found that the coat was actually made of Colobus monkey, This is another endangered species.
The case was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service who determined that the pelts used to make the coat were imported before 1975, when it became illegal to import Colobus fur and as such will not be pressing charges
