Celebrancy began thirty years ago in Australia and New Zealand. The international organization has performed over one million wedding ceremonies throughout the world and has now become very popular among the diverse cultures and people of North America.
Celebrants are professional ceremony officiants who believe in the power and effectiveness of ceremony and ritual to serve basic needs of society and the individual. They collaborate with their clients to create and perform personalized ceremonies that reflect the client’s beliefs, philosophy of life, and personality; not the Celebrant’s.[1]
Celebrants officiate at virtually every life event for individuals, couples, families and organization; with a focus on custom-made ceremonies to reflect the needs, beliefs and values of people from all walks of life. The life-cycle ceremonies that Celebrants specialize in are: weddings, vow renewals, commitments, baby blessings and naming, coming-of-age, rites-of-passage, survivor, seasonal and earth-based rituals, retirements, family reunions, celebrations-of-life, memorials, and funerals. and corporate, civic and non-profit .
The Celebrant USA Foundation & Institute, headquartered in Montclair, New Jersey, is a non-profit education organization dedicated to teaching and certifying professional Celebrants. The North American Chapter trains Celebrants throughout North America in the art of celebration, symbolism, rituals and world traditions. Students can study to become a Celebrant either via distance learning (on-line) classes or attending live classes at the Institute.
The In-Sight Institute of Oklahoma City, OK, provides training specifically for Certified Funeral Celebrants. The Institute was founded by Doug Manning, author and president of In-Sight Books, after studying the concept of Celebrants and how they affect the delivery of funerals in Australia and New Zealand. The In-Sight Institute's emphasis in the 3-day training sessions is to certify Funeral Celebrants who are equipped to provide secular or quasi-secular funeral services, memorial services, or celebrations of life for the growing population in this country who are not affiliated with a church or clergyperson. Since the founding of the Institute in 1999, over 1000 Funeral Celebrants have been certified in North America.
