[edit] The Edict

The 1783 Cedula of Population was an edict by the King of Spain related to Trinidad and Tobago. The edict invited anyone of the Roman Catholic faith who would swear loyalty to the Spanish Crown to "take lands of up to 3,000 acres free of charge."[1]

The affect of the Cedula was immediate, as what had once been a small colony of 1000 in 1773 had boomed to 18,627 by 1797.[2]
