Sleepy Bill Burns

My guess is that he accidentally nixed the full text. The edit summary referred to the unecessary reference and not the rest of the text. To be honest, I don't think that editor was the problem. Long levi 08:43, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Long levi Banned. FYI, Longlevi has just been found to be a sockpuppet of a banned user named Tecmobowl, who has used socks in the past. Accordingly, he has also been banned indefinitely. See [1]--Epeefleche 00:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
    • Also, Long levi's comment above answers one question I had, which was why he added back part of something he had deleted when he was Tecmobowl. Basically, he messed up.     • I put it back to the point where you had added the quote box, and I fine-tuned it a little bit (Tecmo/Levi did make a couple of useful changes). The quote box wants you to supply a source for the quote. I'll let you research that. Baseball Bugs 10:23, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

1935 Tigers Article

Hi there. I have been expanding several articles for the Blue Jays seasons and I started creating articles for the Braves and Expos seasons and I just wanted to say that your 1935 Tigers article is superlative. See also/season templates

Instead of adding things like 1968 Detroit Tigers season in the "see also" section (which should ideally be absent/empty), might it be preferable to include the link in templates such as Template:1968 Detroit Tigers? It's certainly a more natural place for users to seek that material, and I don't think we want player articles cluttered with numerous season articles in the 'see also' section. The Animals articles

Good job creating articles on The Animals' albums and songs. Please be careful about the requirements of music-related articles: album titles go in italics, song titles go in double quotes, songs don't get wikilinked unless there's actually an article for them, album and song articles always have at least two categories (for year and group), and article title disambiguation, when necessary, uses "The Animals" and not just "Animals". If you look at some of the changes I've made to the articles you created, you'll see what I mean. And kudos again for creating these, they have long been missing and it's good to have them here. Thanks for the reply. I actually think adding redlinks on a template like this would be helpful so that everyone who is a fan can create articles. I have personally created both Mercury Hayes and Ricky Powers (as well as Rob Pelinka) but have no credits notable enough for the template. However, I have several WP:GAC candidates in the pipeline that I have taken from stub status. Michigan Wolverines

Good job on the template and the page for important seasons but you are incorrectly wikilinking some people. Michigan Football player articles

You seem to have access to some serious Michigan Football resources that I don't have. We could rack up a bunch of WP:DYKs and WP:GA working together. You may want to check out the {{cite web}} and {{cite book}} templates. I am going to start cleaning up the articles you just sent me. I would appreciate it if you could add any info you may have access to on Greg Skrepenak, Tyrone Wheatley, Jon Vaughn, Al Wistert, Albert Wistert, Whitey Wistert, Mercury Hayes, and Ricky Powers. Several of these are up for consideration at WP:GAC right now. Skrepenak is especially high in the queue. If you add info try to use the templates above like the rest of the references in the article so I don't get dinged for being sloppy with the refs. I am having great difficulty finding info on Whitey Wistert's Michigan Baseball performance that won him the Big Ten MVP. You are doing quite well at cleaning up the template. I suspect most redlinks are for articles that should not exist. I.e., someone like Jarrett Irons would fail at WP:AFD because major college sports stars must play professionally within one year of graduating to pass unless they do something else to make them notable like a Rob Pelinka did. Even Chris Hutchinson (American football) would fail at WP:AFD. His article classifies as Michigan WP:CRUFT at the international wikipedia level. I would probably remove him from the template. In fact, anyone in the Other Important Figures section who did not play professionally or at least sign a pro contract and got cut should be removed from the template regardless of how storied they are as wikipedians.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 06:00, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

I put a lot of tags on the Julius Franks article. Chris Hutchinson

Based on my experience at WP:AFD Hutchinson is a borderline case. I have watched Duke basketball players get AFDed. Irons is O.K. There is more to him than being an All-American that non Michiganders would care about. I don't know how loose things are going to get, but I had a McDonald's All-American headed for Georgetown AFDed. I am just saying be careful. I suppose with our template all UM All-Americans may be kept by association with each other. I am just not so confident about Hutchinson. Dan Dworsky

Dan Dworsky has WP:FA potential. I would love to work with you toward this end. Is it possible that you could convert some of your references to {{cite news}}, and {{cite book}} format? I don't know if you have ever pursued FA, but they get picky about minute details like which of the three types of WP:DASHes you use. You would certainly have to cite your work properly. I am going to try to do Don Dufek, Glen Steele and John Vitale tomorrow. Then, I will get to Dworsky as time permits. I have a lot of work to do for another project on Thursday and Friday though. You may want to look at T:TDYK. I did not nominate Hutchinson. His text is just short of the required 1500 characters. If you want you can beef up his article and nominate it. We have until the end of the 29th (UTC) to make such a nomination. Keep up the good work on Dan Dworsky. One of the biggest improvements you could make would be to beef up his WP:LEAD. Since he has a lot of images one should be moved to the upper right as the main image with an appropriate WP:CAPTION. I am going to start working on the articles I said I was going to clean up. I tagged all of Julius Franks like you said. I want to find an obituary for Dick Rifenburg. His birth date would be nice. Regarding Bell. Most succinctly Bell was a professional running back who had his greatest success in college. Nonetheless, it is fairly standard to lead with the fact that he was a professional running back. Even Ricky Powers who had a far less notable NFL career and made GA (and has a easily documented current career) is written with the Professional running back info first. In almost all cases, it is more important to be a professional running back than a college star. I think the exceptions would be practice squad and lesser league professionals. Making the grade in the NFL for three years is a bigger deal than being a star in college in this sense. Many a college star (even bigger than Bell) failed in the NFL. I have put in a request for the source with the template creator. I do not recall how playoff rosters from that era were assembled or whether 49 was even the full number. It's 53 now isn't it. I can not recall if weekly roster changes were allowed for the playoffs. He might have played in some games and not in others. It is difficult to tell with an OL.
As for 1934. That is what I am looking for. I could not find anything about Whitey Wisterts baseball career at UofM and he was Big Ten MVP. He must have some good stuff. With enough stuff we might be able to push him for WP:GA.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 00:36, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Template

I am thinking of eliminating the other important figures section. I think we have fleshed out every type of individual who could reasonably contest being added for being in a class of important individuals. I think the remaining persons are personal favorites more than important persons. The only possible category I might add would be Michigan Hall of Honor. However, I think we should leave the template generic so that other schools from other conferences as well as our own can copy it in a way that helps the project move forward without needless battles. I like guys like Dennis Franklin, Jon Vaughn and Jamie Morris. However, from the international Wikipedian perspective, they are not cleanly distinguished from others not included on the template. Why not add Julius Franks, Elmer Gedeon and endless others if we don't just say we have got all important categories of Michigan players included. I think the best way to look at the template is to view it as a general template that we are using for Michigan. What should every football program (in BCS conference) do? I think it might be unfair to Western Michigan Broncos football for whom being drafted at all or ever having played in the NFL might be worth keeping them on the template to hold them to a BCS standard. However, I think most BCS schools would be able to summarize the important wikilinks for their program by copying our format. We have the second most AAs so even though we seem over loaded it is not too much of a problem as a general policy. I think the best way to shorten the section might be to eliminate the "^" and use italics or underlining to represent consensus and unanimous. I think many of the players who we want to say are important are important due to their recent good will production due to recent athletic production. Even though Chad Henne and Ryan Mallett are important to Michigan football, they have not really earned their place on the template. There will be several 2007 All Big Ten awardees and I don't think either will be first team. However, I will not contest this section due to your explanation of a need for a catch all section, which catches them too. I guess we are doing O.K. You make a good reasoned point about the length of the template being the result of the inordinate number of AAs, Pro Bowlers, etc, who have come out of the U-M program as opposed to other programs. As for specific people in the OIF category, I think Henne is just like Morris and Breaston. Though he never made All-American and may never be a Pro-Bowler, he is the holder of a number of very significant all-time U-M records, including the all-time career record for passing yards. I included Mallett mostly because of his central importance to the current program, but he also holds the U-M record for the longest pass from scrimmage in school history with a 97 yard pass to Manningham in the Nov. 2007 Wisconsin game).   1. You should start trying to promote some of our best work like Bob Chappuis and Germany Schulz
  2. On the talk pages you should be adding {{WPBiography}}, {{NFLproject}}, {{WikiProject College football}}, & {{WikiProject Michigan}} where applicable. I add Michigan whenever someone was raised in Michigan before playing for the Wolverines or coached in Michigan afterwards.
  3. You may want to begin using {{NFL PlayerCoach}} for players who become coaches. I had converted Ted Petoskey some time ago and converted Jack Blott today. Germany Schulz, John Maulbetsch, Gustave Ferbert, Bump Elliott and James B. Craig could all use such a conversion. My New NCAA Chart

Many thanks for reviewing the table. I always appreciate input on my work. Ah, 1947...I cringe thinking about how many Blue fans I will have to face about that year. First, I would like to assure you that I personally consider Michigan to have been the best football team in the nation in 1947, and I'm sure a vast majority of experts would agree with me (it wouldn't surprise me if half of the 119 writers that voted Notre Dame #1 in the special poll were strict adherents to the pre-bowls format, and the other half was just plain dumb — although I might be in agreement to the tiniest degree with the former, as, in those days, the bowl game was not so much a season climax as a nice trip to California, with a football game thrown in). I wish to God I could bold the Mad Magicians — nine other Michigan teams won consensus national championships, and yet the 1947 squad, the team robbed of the title by famous Notre Dame, was the best of the bunch. I smiled when you mentioned Bump. In fact, I have a great deal of sympathy for your situation. The 1958 Hawkeyes won their consensus title from the FWAA, who voted after Iowa smashed Cal 38-12 in the Rose Bowl. So, be prepared, as I will sound like a massive hypocrite defending the decision to exclude Michigan's '47 team from consensus status, a decision which I can find no way out of and yet am tortured by every day. Sorry for the melodrama.

The sources of the consensus national championships are the official NCAA record book and the list of champions on NCAAsports.com, the official site for NCAA sports. Like you, I am very appreciative of the inclusion of the NCF as a consensus selector through 1935 (which knocks on four more titles for Michigan). The period from 1950 to the present is also very sound, save the inclusion of the NFF as a consensus selector. It's the period from 1936 to 1949 that gets me. A number of deserving teams were named national champion by selectors other than the AP, with the 1947 Wolverines leading the pack. (no pun intended — wolverines travel in packs, right?) Both the record book and the NCAAsports.com list have Notre Dame as the one and only AP champion of '47. I read all of the information about the special poll of 1947 in 1947 Michigan Wolverines football team. It goes without saying that it is difficult to prove what was and wasn't official sixty years ago, and, in this situation, I'm afraid that it might take more than a few local newspapers to overthrow the NCAA. Most of what I've heard claims that DFP editor Lyall Smith put together the poll, and all of what I've heard claims that the poll was unofficial. Basically, what it comes down to is finding a way to prove that the special poll was official, if such an achievement is possible. If you can do it I would be behind you 100%, and I'll provide any help you may need along the way. As I've said, I would love to be able to list Michigan as a consensus national champion in 1947, but, until I have enough to go on, the decision has been made by myself and others to rely only on the official information. I don't want to come across as holding a bias towards Notre Dame — in fact, I am a considerably outspoken opponent of Notre Dame's status as king of the college game. One national championship in the last thirty years should hardly earn one the title of king. But you must understand that departing from the method used for designating consensus champions for one year out of 137 will look even more biased, especially since, as hard as it may be to swallow, the popular bias towards Michigan is nearly as bad as the one towards Notre Dame. There are other years besides 1947 in which the consensus method leaves out a deserving or includes an undeserving, but strict consistency should be favored over picking and choosing. A deserving Michigan team left out will almost always generate more controversy than another deserving left out. Obviously, none of that would matter if the AP really did name two official #1's in '47. I would very much like to see the PDF's of the AP articles. My email is iowa13@gmail.com. As always, thanks for the help. I am unsure about one thing you might find in your article treasure chest. I know at the end of 1948 he held the Michigan career interceptions record. However, his best single season was his sophomore year and he may have set it in 1947 or even possibly 46 depending on how many he had in 1944 and 1947. As hard as you work, these changes aren't too much for you to handle. The queue is almost a moth for articles. Basically, the Auto peer review just says what rules you are violating. Many of these will be because the direct quote violates a rule. For example, a direct quote might use a contraction. Just put a note on the talk page that the article has a direct quote that is causing the problem. Sample A-A page

I would cite as a source such as the ESPN Encyclopedia of College Football, which clearly enumerates for each season which All-American lists are recognized for unanimous and consensus (50%) designations. I would also make sure the All-American page clearly explains what consensus and unanimous are with a sourced ref if possible. Then you could also note that in any year there are several other lists not officially recognized toward consensus/unanimous designation to account for the likes of the controversies I pointed out on your talk page earlier. The ESPN format is pretty good. They use a table where in one column is the players name and in each of the other columns is a particular list with appropriate checks. I have serveral problems with the Ed Frutig article. I just changed the DOB in the template, but as you say it is still controversial. NPOV would say report all sides that are clearly WP:ATT. One side would be that he was a monster punt blocker who recorded five in one season. The other is that according to official NCAA records he could not have record more than 2 or 3 in any one season. Take a look at what I did with Gene Derricotte on a similar issue when the NCAA, Big Ten and Michigan record books geve three different sides of the story on his big year. Resource help

I got a GA on hold at Talk:Tyrone Wheatley. There are a couple of reviewer concerns that might be aided by your resources:

  • "Some describe him as the greatest football player in Michigan High School history." If you're going to same "some", include more than one source.
  • I could just reword, but if there are multiple sources that would be interesting.
  • "In college, Wheatley also ran track. He was the 1994 Big Ten 110 metre hurdles champion and was selected first team All-Big Ten.[28]" Single and two-sentence paragraphs either need to be expanded or incorporated into another paragraph. I'm sure there is some more information about this that can be added.

With respect to the latter of the above, since he was a high school state champion in four events and a big ten champion in only one, it is interesting to figure out if he ran more than one of the four events in college and if his All-Big Ten award was merely for hurdling or for a combination of events. Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Detroit Tigers nicknames, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. RE:Merv Pregulman

Clancy

Also can you find out how close the 1967 AFL Rookie of the Year vote was? I imagine Griese and Clancy may have been close to George Webster in the voting. Also, Pro-football reference denotes Clancy as a 1-time ProBowler, but the All-star games were separate. I assume this means he played in the AFL All-Star game. Woolfolk

I have discovered that there may be a lot missing on Wolfolk. I can not verify for certain that he was a member of the 1981 Big Ten 4x100m relay champions although I know he was on both the 1980 (UofM record book) and 1982 teams (big Ten Champs) so it is probably a safe assumption. He is on several other UofM record setting relay teams. I will beef up the article tommorow. All this leads me to believe he was likely on some Indoor Big Ten relay team champs, but I can not find the info. In fact, he may have won some indoor individual Big Ten Champs that are not listed. This all follows with the All-Big Ten teams that I can not find from that era. Are indoor and outdoor separate All-Big Ten teams? I called the Big Ten office today to find out why the Big Ten Record book posted online does not include indoor track individual champions or pre-1984 All-Big Ten teams and they gave the excuse that records aren't kept for indoor track and All-Big Ten started in track in 1984. They put me in touch with someone at UofM's media services who said he would send me a .pdf of Michigan indoor track going back to 1918 which may help Butch Woolfolk, Tyrone Wheatley, Elmer Gedeon, George Hoey, Braylon Edwards and many others depending on what info it has. I hope it is a serious enough publication to be cited on WP. I think I will take Tyrone Wheatley to WP:FAC when it gets off WP:PR. Currently, the only NFL player FA is Jim Thorpe (from what I can tell) and he was promoted on August 13, 2004. Willis Ward

I got the 2008 Michigan Track & Field Media guide. They do not credit Ward as ever being a NCAA champion. High jump 2nd in 1935, 3rd in 1933 and long jump 4th in 1935 giving him three All-American recognitions. The Big Ten record book does not credit him as an NCAA champion. I apologize, for Bump Elliott and Butch Woolfolk I removed the fair use images because the rationale no longer applies with properly licened images. I reverted the other edits and the images are still there. If it is just living football player infoboxes Elmer Gedeon is O.K. because he is dead and does not use a football info box. UM hoops

I had mentioned it to you for a couple reasons:

  1. It is kind of an honor to create such an important page, which will surely be highly trafficked once created and properly linked.
  2. You have done so much for Michigan Athletics that I think you deserve such an honor.
  3. It kind of looks like you are running out of Michigan Athletics pages to work on.
  4. It is kind of fun to do a page that will be actively edited with current news and since you have done so much creating of back roads articles, I thought you might want to be the creator of one that is a main thoroughfare as it were.


I am a big hoops fan, but have lost interest over the last few years of no Dance tickets. I actually flew to the tournament to see Webber call timeout and was also in attendance when the 1997 squad won the NIT. Both games no longer exist officially however. I am not sure I am the man to tackle such an article. However, while creating the coach template, I noticed that eight big ten team articles exist and Michigan has a redirect. We are all alone in 9th place I guess, which is about proper given the current state of Michigan hoops. We are ahead of Penn State and Northwestern who don't even have redirects. The article will get written. People will notice eventually. As I look at Chappuis' article I realize his military section is a little fluffier than I would like. Catholic churches in the LA archdiocese

Congratulations on tackling this important project!

I was just expressing my opinion on the Afd (too lengthily for a brand new article! ) basically in favor of keeping the article at least until it matured. Since everybody jumped in and improved it, that was in pretty short order. I had jokingly thought to try this again on another church - come in with a weak article deliberately, then nominate it myself for deletion and complain to my fellow editors to help! :) This was the fastest improvement I think I have ever seen on Wikipedia. It went from Afd to "GA" in about three days!  :)

Sorry. I know of no general source on the web for the size of a parish. I know each parish has this info but I don't know who gets that info besides the bishop who might publish it. You'd think there'd be a parish site comparable to those schools have. So I just try to blunder into a figure from browsing for parishioners. Even one from a few years back would be good enough for me.

I regret that I cannot help. I have articles (incl churches) in Vermont and in several counties in Florida and others totalling about 875 articles I'm watching. While this is nowhere close to what "real" editors do (Nyttend watches 8000!) it's about all I can handle. And I do usually need a "personal" connection to keep me interested. Nice of you to ask. Gene Derricotte

I feel that a lot of other factors too are taken into account while assessing an article apart from size. Though the article is long enough, I dont think it has enough sub-headings. Well, maybe, you might have a different opinion altogether. I personally feel that there are a few drawbacks with the article. There is little on his personal life and it has been included under te subheading "College" which might be inappropriate.
