Cavalier flying boat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cavalier was the first flying boat in the Atlantic service of Imperial Airways.

In 1937, Imperial Airways and Pan American World Airways opened up an experimental London -> New York -> Bermuda service using their flying boats. The Imperial Airways employed an Empire flying boat Cavalier. It sported long-range fuel tanks and had a range of about 1500 km. Experimentally, it was shipped by sea to Bermuda. However, the experimental Atlantic route lasted only 18 months as the Cavalier was lost in January 1939. The rescue operation made headlines worldwide.
