Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/cleanup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The cleanup activities related to Wikipedia:Categories for deletion are tremendously time consuming to do by hand. A variety of bots are now able to do most of this work automatically.
- Articles in categories tagged with {{Categoryredirect}} are automatically refiled by user:NekoDaemon, run by user:AllyUnion.
- Categories can be renamed or deleted by user:Pearle, run by user:Beland, or by user:Whobot, run by user:Who. Note that unlike NekoDaemon which runs automatically, Pearle and Whobot are both run by request only and under the explicit control of their owners.
In order to allow any admin to do CFD related cleanup, a fully automated mechanism for renaming and deleting categories could be implemented. Renaming can currently be done (by anyone, not just admins) using NekoDaemon by adding a {{categoryredirect}} to the category redirecting it to its new name. If a similar template were created to label categories to be deleted (and acted on by NekoDaemon), the category rename and deletion processes would both be effectively automated.
There are some security concerns related to such automation, although Pearle currently checks to see if a category to be moved or deleted was properly tagged {{cfr}}, {{cfd}}, etc. Further checks could be added to ensure categories to be moved or deleted were actually listed on WP:CFD, or that the tag acted on by the cleanup bot was added by an admin.
