[edit] "Uncategorised" semantics

Given the discussion at WT:CAT about whether articles with sorted type categories are "categorised" or not, wouldn't it be preferable to count the "uncat" and the "uncatstub" totals separately? If nothing else, for morale reasons, given that there's a huge "hidden" backlog of stub-category-only articles lurking out there. Alai 00:23, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Has there been a change in the way articles are being tagged?

I am wondering if something has changed in the timing of method in which articles are being tagged as being uncategorized? The following is a count of articles in the Category:Uncategorized from December 2007

  • As of Dec 24 - 8462 articles left to go
  • As of Dec 21 - 947 articles left to go
  • As of Dec 12 - 752 articles left to go
  • As of Dec 4 - 200 articles left to go

There was a huge jump between Dec 21 and Dec 24 and the count increase prior to that seems slower than usual. For a short historical listing of how the numbers have changed over the past few months see my user page: User:Dbiel/Uncategorized History

It is nice to see that for the first time the only tagged uncategorized articles are in the current month of December, all previous months have been cleared. But at the same time it is disappointing to see the huge jump in the number of tagged articles. Dbiel (Talk) 01:46, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

To expand, I wonder if the bot has been on a Wiki break. Article Attacking Faulty Reasoning became uncategorized due to vandalism at 02:34, November 20, 2007 and was tagged by User:Nn123645 as uncategorized at 15:39, December 21, 2007.

Another example: article BCT Guiding Documents was created 06:31, November 6, 2007 and also tagged as uncategorized by User:Nn123645 at 15:42, December 21, 2007 using AWB. It would appear that he did a major tagging run on December 21 that picked up a lot of previously untagged article. As my test sample is small, my conclusion may be in error.

Just wondering how often the database is scanned for uncategoriezed articles? Dbiel (Taltwo kk) 02:39, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Via the special page, it's every three days. However, I tend to periodically (if not to say, sporadically) run larger bot-tagging batches from either the db dumps, which tend to be every two months or so, or from toolserver queries, which could be done as often as desired (at least up to the point where the toolserver admins get ticked off about this hogging the job queue too often).
