Catigbian is a 4th class municipality in the province of Bohol, Philippines. Catigbian is an interior town north of Balilihan, South of Sagbayan and Tubigon, East of San Isidro and west of Batuan. It is an old community, being one of the villages where the rebels were resettled after the Dagohoy Rebellion had been suppressed in 1829. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 23,333 people.

[edit] Origin of the Name
Catigbian was name after a grass called Katigbi, which grow abundantly in the area. Many years ago, some people in the lowlands came to this town and the liked the place and decided to settle there. They cleared the place where the Katigbi grew and converted it into rice paddies and corn fields.

It is an old community, being one of the villages where the rebels were resettled after the Dagohoy Rebellion had been suppressed in 1829. In 1903, when the province was reorganized, it was annexed to Balilihan but was made an independent municipality once more in june 17, 1949. When the town was recreated in 1949, there were only 15 barrios within its territorial limits compared to the 22 barangays it has now.

The Feast Day of Catigbian is every December 8. Its Patron Saint is Immaculate Conception.

Catigbian is famous for its caves, hanging bridges, handicrafts, livestock market and for its nature resort.
[edit] The Katigbawan Festival
But what distinguishes Catigbian from other towns is its annual festival, the Katigbawan. A week-long festival comprising of various activities like carabao-racing, hog-catching, agrofair, motorcross and a search for Miss Katigbawan. This affair happens only in June.
This four-day event has several activities lined up starting with the opening of the festival with a parade after a holy mass. It is followed by a comparza and a talent contest of Miss Katigbawan candidates during the day. Judging of the display of agro fair, bloodletting and motorcross takes place on the second day. On the third day, it was the turn of the Carabao Parade with carabao-racing and hog catching at central elementary school and the Search for Catigbian's prettiest, with the Miss Katigbawan Beauty Pageant in the evening. On the fourth day is the Street Dancing and then a fire works display to cap the festival.

A beauty and brains search for the girl best exemplifying the true Catigbianon. This pageant coincides with the Katigbawan Festival with the winner representing the town in the province's most prestigious pageant, the Miss Bohol Sandugo come July.

The Municipality of Catigbian is located 35 kilometers from Bohol's capital city, Tagbilaran. It is just a 50-minute trip from Tagbilaran, going north passing thru the towns of Cortes, Antequera and Balilihan. The most common means of public transportation going to and from Catigbian is by bus or jeepney. Van-for-hire and taxis also frequent the town.
